In another episode of In Wheel Time Car Talk, we introduced a successful auto shop program in Napperville, Illinois, led by Greg Ditch.  Greg has had a lifelong passion with the automotive world, and is sharing that with any young person that is interested.  He has been successful in growing a struggling high school program into a full enrolment program with after school sessions to help fill the knowledge void. One of the students has graduated and gone on to UTI, specializing in diesel.  But Alina Aubakirova never forgot the program that got her interested in automobiles and is now working with the program on a special build.  The 'team' is  putting together and entry to run in the Texas Mile - a speed event in South Texas.  In this episode, we talk with Alina and Greg Ditch about the program, the S10 they are building and some of the plans they have. The days of using a feeler gauge to set the plugs and point before hitting the road are long gone. Now it is more about understanding what all the warning lights mean - how to transfer that 'check engine light' into a code that can be defined, analyzed and hopefully lead to a fix. For years we have talked about the automotive tech shortage in the work place.  Dealerships have taken to providing incentives and some have even gone into the training business so they can develop their own. We think one of the issues starts very early, like in high school.  Many of us grew up with auto shop classes being available in the high schools.  We could learn some of the basics, or even better ways to do things.  For some of us, it also let us know how far we wanted to go 'pulling wrenches'.   Budget cuts, technology, student interest, there are a lot of reasons that there are not as many of these classes.  However, we found Greg Ditch, Napperville High School Auto Shop teach that is growing his attendance, particularly the female students.   Join us as we learn more about the instructor that has turned the program around, as well as what he thinks the secrets to success are. The Pamona Fair Grounds is home of the NHRA Museum and  fabled drag racing events.  There is also an event that brings in some of the best of the best in automotive custom builds - The Grand National Roadster Show. With a history of luxury, the Cadillac brand has long been a mainstay of the automotive market. Long cars, long fins and styles to stand out seem to be part of the mix. As the world morphed into SUVs that are big enough to live in, the Cadillac name continues with the Escalade. With luxury in hand, where do you go as a brand? How about go to the 'V'? For sometime now, we have been visiting with God's Garage, located in the Conroe, Texas, area.    Sometimes it is hard to imagine the hardships of other people, such as not having a vehicle.  No car means walking to the grocery store with children in tow.  Maybe a walk to the daycare isn't so bad unless it is miles away with no public transportation.  Work?   This is a group of volunteers that are working to assist single moms, particularly veteran moms that don't have a vehicle which makes life a lot harder.  Each month, they get over 120 applications for assistance, and while it would be great to help everyone, that is just not life.  So there is a process...
