Over the past few months, we have been talking with new car dealers about how the market for new automobiles is doing. With the pandemic causing a slow down in production, and then when trying to get back up to speed, the chip shortage slams production again, creating a wierd market place for consumers. From the new car market, we shifted to the pro-owned dealers to see how they were doing as the new segment issues seemed to be driving comsumers their direction. Turns out they are doing very well, so long as they can find inventory. So then we wondered about the classic car segment - are there any deals or great values to be found during all this hubbub? We asked Michael Kamins of Kamins Motorcars how things were going from his perspective, and we got our answer along with a look aroun 'one' warehouse. When it comes to tire 'shopping' it is not always the decision making process that takes so long, but getting the actual tires installed. We go to the box store, stand in line, then patiently wait our turn as the new tires are mounted, balanced and then installed. A lot of us have learned to just drop the vehicle off and go on about our business, but we can't always do that. While oval dirt tracks have been a staple of racing across the southern part of the United States, it is the oval asphalt racing that really caught on and developed into what we now know as NASCAR. But not everyone is ready to run the high-banked ovals so the short asphalt tracks have developed a big following. Helping to fuel that following, is the Gulf Coast Racing Series, with promoter Gina Schild Knowles leading the way. There are two tracks in the series, one in Houston and one in Mobile, each with it's own unique racing. Coming up on September 25, 2021, is one of our favorite car shows - it will be the 3rd Annual Woody's Waterfront Car Show. In Wheel Time will be live! Designing automobiles for over 100 years, someone is bound to occasionally come us with some losers to go along with all the winners. Everyone is concerned with safety and each year, the auto manufactures improve a lot of the systems that help drivers avoid accidents. Most are currently directed to helping the driver drive safer but there are also systems coming along that don't need manual intervention. As a starter, look at the interactive lane assist or even the new cruise controls that slow a vehicle down to maintain spacing. Some systems will even bring a vehicle to a stop. Of course the OEM can't do it alone, so there are companies like DERQ, Jamie Sullivan joins us to explain what a company like DERQ is doing to further develop Active Collision Avoidance that can help prevent accidents at intersections where it any collision can be serious. The Chevrolet Corvette has long held a special place in the automotive world. Not only for performance as a two seat sports car, but in the styling of then vehicle. Another aspect is the optional devlivery of a new Corvette. A new owner can litterally fly in and drive their new car home, litterally putting the first miles on then car. Part of that expeirence is the National Corvette Museum where the full history can been visited along with many of the cars that made that history. The National Corvette Museum also made headline when a large sink hole appeared and literally swallowed several of the cars on display. For most people, the tires on their vehicle are not something they 'think' of on a regular basis, particularly with technology taking over part of the check list. Newer vehicles will let you know if you have a low tire and that is an opportunity to look the tires over. Something that needs to be done on a regular basis. Then it becomes time to replace tires - what brand? what load rating? There are a lot of things to take into consideration and Consumer Reports actually have a test track to help figure all that out. Ok, it is not a muscle car nor what might be considered to be a 'hot rod'. However, in automotive history it is hard to ignore the contribution of English automobile development. The MG series of vehicles are minimal sports cars that sure are fun to drive, even if they can be frustrating to keep running. For Curtis Grider, the answer was to swap in a Pinto drive train - easier to find parts and work on to make the 1951 MG more reliable as a driver. While the Mustang may have started the Pony Wars, the Chevrolet Camaro sure tried to make up for lost time when it came to market. Time once again for another edition of Tailpipes & Tacos - the monthly cruise-in hosted by Stan Holt at the Lupe' Tortilla restaurant in Katy, Texas. The third Saturday of each month, this location is opened early for the Saturday morning auto crowd. Along with coffee, there are other adult choice like a Mimosa, or maybe a Bloody Mary and soft drinks to go along with the breakfast tacos. This may be a restaurant but for the cruise-in, it is all for charity. Stan and Sheila are personal friends of Shirley Muldowney and the funds from the event go to help support her charity - 'Shirley's Kids'. It is August in Houston, so it is hot and the hot rod started rolling in early before the heat. At the July event, we noticed a particular Buick and we approached the drive about sharing her story. She was a little bashful and suggested we wait until the August event, when her husband could join us. Sure enough, we saw the Buick roll in and we cornered Jerry Hines about his 1987 Buick Tur…

We continue with our guests from the August Edition of Tailpipes & Tacos in Katy, Texas. It is the monthly Saturday morning cruise-in that also serves as a fund raiser for 'Shirley's Kids' - the foundation created by the First Lady of Drag Racing, Shirley Muldowney. Shirley actually attending one of the events back in 2019 and hopefully she will find her way back in the near future. The iconic 1957 Thunderbird has always been somewhat of a 'glamor machine' with several movies using one for effect. So when Charlie Miller went looking at his '57 and heard the story about how it had been in the movie 'Sin City', that pretty well sealed the deal.
