It is the 4th of July Weekend, and the In Wheel Time Car Talk Crew is taking a rare weekend off to enjoy some time with family and friends. It took some doing, but we picked a few of our favorite guest segments that we hope you enjoy as much as we do. There have been a lot of names associated with the Pikes' Peak Hill Climb as races speed up the the side of the mountain seeking glory and fame! What started out as dirt roads has developed into an asphalt runway over the years as cars get faster and faster. The new EVs have also been showing up with their massive amounts of torque. Friend of the show, Richard Tomlain from Apex Auto Works is super involved with road racing and is now part of the safety crew for the event, so he gets to see a lot of things most of us don't even think about. The world of RVs has really exploded the last few years. Not only does it provide a chance to got out with nature, it is the ability to travel with a 'home' and during the pandemic, it provided a way for many people to get 'out'. For many people, that was their introduction to RVs, but for others, there are even more reasons to go RV'n. Many new RVs have 'toy haulers', a place where scooters, three wheelers, or even golf carts can be stored or hauled. In some cases, there is even room for a 'car'. In this episode, Randy Borcherding joins Cody Corcoran with a look around his ATC toy hauler. It is Cody's full time home, but it will haul a fullsize Mustang sized vehicle. Along with style, paint color is one of the first things that people see on any vehicle. It is there and no getting around it. Bright yellows, give-me-a-ticket reds, ocean blues, and a New Zealand Green...? Randy Daigle literally started with a 'field car' near Ponca City, Oklahoma. He has been upgrading the power train, the interio and of course the unique paint color. The vehicle now has over 48k miles on it, running from just north of Houston, so the run up to Granbury, Texas, for the Lone Star Street Rod Association annual State Run. Anytime you see an event with several hundred vehicles from across a five state area at the same place, know that there has been a lot of work behind the scenes. It takes a while to find that location, get all the permits in place, and of course it takes volunteers and sponsors to make it finally happen. For the Lone Star Street Rod Association State Run 2022, one of the groups that stepped up is the Granbury, Texas CVB. We couldn't help but see the green/white 'panel' truck amongst the trees, so we had to check it out. We first saw the 1932 Ford Woody belonging to Orville Adair in our hotel parking lot. In fact, late evening, some looky-lous from the hotel walked over to check it out. The Woody is a hot rod, and not fully factory, but with some really sweet changes. The hand built Maple wood panels were crafted by Orville in his garage. Orville also works on metal and other than the interior and the top, took this hot rod to the next leve...in his garage. It is a great story and we will let Orville share the details. Like many automotive enthusiests, Orville also has a '48 Ford Convertable and a '40 Ford Coupe in his stable of projects. More to come on those.... Early in 2022, we started working with the Lone Star Street Rod Association about their 2022 State Run to be held in Granbury, Texas. The idea was that we would bring our live broadcast to the event for a Saturday morning broadcast to the event. Working with Gary Henry, Editor of the group newsletter, we finally worked out the details. Something we are really REALLY glad we were able to do as it is an outstanding event that we hope to attend again. Joining us on our live program is the President of the LSSRA, Mr. Rick Neely, out of Midland, Texas, who provides a look at the organization as well as an overlook of the event. We also get to look at his short bed Ford pickup with tilt front end, black 'ol school wheels and updated interior. Seems Rick also has a '39 Cadillac, /57 Buick complete with nailhead motor, and a '37 Olds Coupe that we hope to checkout sometime in the future. Hard not to notice that gas prices have gone totally bonkers, and it doesn't look like there is much going to change that in the near future. So of course, an EV becomes a consideration - they appear to be more economical per mile, have plenty of satety features buit in, and when it comes to technology, they are rolling computors. What is not to like? Other than some range anxiety that is getting better as technology continues to improve on batteries, and of course building out a charging infrasturcture will also help. Then there is the cost.... Scott Painter, CEO of Autonomy, currently based in California with plans to expand even here to Texas, has a different business model. It is a model that may enable a wanna be EV buyer to find a way into that market without mortaging the house or giving up a college education. A lot of clubs are 'open' as in they accept a variety of make and model vehicles. Other clubs can be brand specific, model specific and even a year or range of years specific. A lot of clubs are very active with being on the road to events as a group or maybe just some Saturday morning cruize-ins. Road trips can be done by clubs, but often it is a sub-set or group of enthusiests heading out to one of the herolded roadways for some driving thrills.
