Meet The Ultimate 80s Garage

let's get right to it, shall we? Uh, special guest this morning is Denny Moody. He is the owner, curator, and master of all things Ultimate 80s. He's the owner of the Ultimate 80s garage out in Fulshire, Texas. All right. Denny, good morning to you and thanks for joining us.

Well, you bet. And um, so I guess the first question is you obviously are an 80s and 90s kind of guy.

I am, yeah.

Yeah, well, uh, it it uh it kind of this is it strikes me as what we all of us car guys really like is to you know have some stuff in the garage that we can relate to, that we grew up with, that we can that we can relate to. I see that you've got the Denny's sign behind you. That's cute.

Yeah, I think so. Yeah. Um, watches. Look, you got Michael Jordan behind you. You got, I mean, this is what we're talking about. This is the ultimate 80s garage. So what uh possessed you to get this going?

SPEAKER_02 2:16

Well, uh growing up in the 80s and 90s, um, you know, I I I saw I saw collections on television of like 60s and 50s and 60s cars where they um, you know, they had a beautiful garage and they had a malt shop in there and they had all the aesthetic of it. I appreciated what I was seeing, but I I had no real point of reference to any of that. I mean, it didn't seem to me. Uh, so I wanted to create something like that for a kid from my generation. So hence the ultimate 80s garage.

Yeah, and I assume that uh you've got uh some followers in the 80s and 90s generation, and uh, you know, um apparently you're a big deal out in Fulshire, Texas.

Um yeah, yeah, apparently.

Don Armstrong 3:05

Well, I mean, I didn't mean to put you on the spot, but uh I'm going, you know, huh? My I raised my girls in the 80s and 90s, and you kind of fall into that category. And um sure, I I could I could go for a son-in-law that has a really cool garage that I could hang out and we could watch football together and stuff like that. And I'm sure that you've got those guys around you.

I I do, yeah. Um, and that was the neat thing about this journey of you know having the car shows and inviting people into the garage is is I found that there were a lot of folks just like me that that really didn't have uh a lot to relate to to people outside of the car world. So, you know, you get me in these neighborhood uh house parties, and guys are like, you know, hey Denny, what are you into? Uh, you know, you like to hunt? Well, no, not really. Uh, do you do you like to fish? And about a four or five things they would ask me, I would say no. They'd be like, okay, I'll just go and talk to the other person. So um there's a lot of guys like me that are just looking for a community of people that they can relate to, and the car community uh provides that for us, uh, guys into these real niche kind of hobbies.

So I'm gonna throw out a car name to you, and um and I say that because I lovingly refer to uh the Buick Regal as a standout of the 80s.

The Corvette Story And Collecting

You gotta you okay. So there's a Corvette, there's a Ferrari. Nice. Those are yours?

Yes, and actually, this Corvette was my very first car. I've owned that since I was 15 years old.

It's a 1980, so I built this in high school. Yeah.

Wow, which high school did you go to?

I went to Alvin High School, home of the Yellow Jackets.

All right, Alvin High School. Well, look at that car. That's a beautiful example of 1980, right there, my friend. Absolutely. Yeah. Is it all stock?

SPEAKER_02 5:18

It is, yeah, it's it's mostly stock. I basically spent all my lunch money on this thing. I would literally, I would literally save like three dollars from not eating lunch so I could spend it on this car. I'd have like 20 bucks so I could head to super shops on the weekend.

Don Armstrong 5:34

Super shops, boy, there's a bell. Oh, very well, yeah. Spencer Highway. Yeah, yeah. They took over that whole market, as a matter of fact. And then the market kind of dried up because kids your age didn't know what to do with cars. Uh for the most part. You did, we did, and uh, that's kind of where we drew our love from uh high school stuff.

Yeah, um you you know, my dad figured out very early that uh he could buy me an old junk car and that was cheaper than buying toys.

Don Armstrong 6:05

Well, yeah, in many cases, that that's exactly right. So, um, what did your dad do? Do we know your dad?

SPEAKER_02 6:13

Yes. Uh so my dad uh he worked at the port of Houston, he was a longshoreman, and um he had originally bought this car from a friend of ours because he was gonna drive it to work every day, and he's a pretty big guy. He's six three and about you know he drove this to car the he drove this to work once, and he's like, Yeah, I'm not doing this, that's it.

Yeah, and then he gave it to you. Well, lucky you boy. I'll tell you what, as a as a kid of any age, I'd love to have I'd love to have that car today. That's a pretty car. Yeah, and as has it has it got an L82 engine in it, or is it just a stock 350?

It's the L48 in this one.

Okay, the 48. That's the 48. Yeah, yes, stock engine. And it's got and it's got the upgraded wheels on it, too. Like the it does.

Yeah, oh yes, very shiny, yeah, polished, as a matter of fact. Uh, you know, I uh I'm jealous. What so uh find out more about you? What what do you do in in real life?

In real life, uh I work in oil and gas.

Okay, and obviously you've been pretty successful at it, I assume.

Uh I've been very successful at it, yes. Um you know, people come in here and they they assume that you just wrote a check for all this. It's not really the case. I built this over a course of you know about 20 years uh between the cars and all the memorabilia and things.

Sure, of course. And uh, you know, at one point I had a garage full of stuff, and uh now that I'm older, I I've I've pared it down to the point where I have nothing. Yeah, it's not quite it's not that quite that radical, but I still have some memorabilia in there, not as nice as yours. So you have meets, do you have people come out to the house? Do you have

Retrofest West Details And Registration

pronoun events? What what tell us about uh your group that you're with?

Yeah, so um I host an annual event called Retrofest West, and it's a celebration of 80s and 90s cars culture and lifestyle. So um it's open to cars from the 80s and 90s. We'll normally do 250 plus cars here on the property, just 80s and 90s cars, and everyone dresses up in 80s gear, and it's just a fun event. Um and people, you know, people want to people come to the property because you know, we're we're on um, you know, a three and a half acre place here, and it the cars just look better on the grass. I call it the Easter egg effect. Same thing with the double beach, you know. When you put cars on grass, they just pop, the colors pop versus concrete, you know. And plus, since you're at someone's house, it's a more personal, it feels more like a family reunion.

Do neighbors feel okay about that?

Uh actually, they do. My neighbor across the street loaned me his empty 1.5 acre lot so that we could park spectators there.

Uh in my collection now, I've paired it down a bit. Um, I'm down to about 10. I was at height of 20.

Uh no fee. Everything's free. We don't charge anyone anything. We don't charge vendors, we don't charge retention.

Garage Floor Coatings And Real Costs

Don Armstrong 15:30

can still show up. So uh, you know, I I I I will tell you that I got into painting garage floors. Gosh, back in 2007. I've spilt paint on garage floors. Well, I've done that too. But as they say, when you know you paint a car, it's really all in the prep. Yeah. And I have found out through multiple mistakes that it really is all in the prep. Yeah. And you've got to do it by the directions. Or you have enough money in your savings account that you can hire somebody that is a garage floor prep guy to come out and spend a couple thousand, three thousand dollars and go for it. But the paint these days is like two or three thousand dollars a gallon.

Well, depending on the kind of paint you use, a prep, like you said, and the condition of the floor, actually. We can get into that. Yeah. Okay, we'll go for it. All right. Well, uh the main types of garage floor coatings are epoxy, polyurethane, polyurea, polyaspartic, and uh poly uh polycuramine. I know this way. Okay, that way. Uh plus you've got floor paints that every one of them offers different durability, chemical resistance, and application methods, like Don said. So the national average of epoxy garage floor coatings ranges from 1700 to 30 to 3,500, basically. Uh but most homeowners pay around 23 to 2500 to have it done. It depends on how much you want to spend, the of the coating, the size of your floor, and the condition of the concrete and whatever add-ons you want into that. So here we go. One of them is epoxy coatings. It's a two-part resin system and chemically bonds to concrete, forming a hard, durable surface. It's highly resistant to chemicals, any impacts or abrasions, and makes it ideal for garages with heavy traffic or machinery. Epoxies come in several forms. They come in a water base, uh, low, high solid epoxy, and 100% solid epoxy. So there you go with that one. The next one we have is a polyurethane coating. Uh, it's flexible, it's a chemical resistant product, uh, offering a smooth glossy finish. There's less brittle than epoxy, and can handle temperature fluctuations better. Uh, polyurethane is often used as a top coat over epoxy to enhance its UV resistance and durability. Polyurrhea coatings, it's fast curing, it's flexible, it's durable, uh, and its flexibility allows it to stretch without cracking, making it resistant to temperature changes and heavy wear. Polyurrhea is ideal for high traffic areas, requires quick application due to its rapid curing time. So if you're using it, you gotta be quick with this, or it's gonna kind of uh bugger up what you're trying to do. Uh polyparas uh polyasparic coatings uh is a modified version of a polyurrhe, similar durability and flexibility and improved UV resistance. It also cures quickly, allowing for minimal downtime, which is useful for chemical uh for commercial and busy residential garages, sort of like what we did with uh uh Mr. Moody there. Uh polycuramine coatings combines benefits of polyuria and epoxy, offering a self-leveling, self-leveling, highly durable coating that can often be applied in a single coat, which is very very good because you don't want to spend a lot of time out there. It provides excellent chemical and abrasion resistance and is suitable for the DIY or professional application. Now, things to consider the key points of this is the durability. Is it resistance to wear? Uh, application, is it easy to install, cure time, number of coats you got to put down, maintenance, cleaning requirements. Do you spill something on there, you gotta hurry up and get it off there? The upkeep, the cost. Now, the cost again is size, what you want to do, you want certain

Prep Work Mistakes And DIY Lessons

uh accents put into the coating. Those are all cost factors. And then, of course, the lifespan, how long will it last? So those are things to consider.

Don Armstrong 19:19

My ex experience with that is uh paint.

Jeff Dziekan 19:22

Yeah, you could be.

Don Armstrong 19:25

Um, it was relatively um well, it it was cost effective for me, but there was a lot of prep involved, and you gotta put down, you know, a base coat and do this la la la la. Well, it just so happened that I lucked into it and did okay. And it took a whole week. You know, you gotta let it cure, you gotta let it breathe.

Jeff Dziekan 19:46

All of that. The prep, you gotta scrub it with a broom and all of that. Oh yeah. Oh, yeah.

Don Armstrong 19:50

And those chemicals alone will kill you. And then you have to etch it. Yeah, yeah. Etch it. Yeah. And uh that was a process that I didn't know anything about, but I learned pretty quickly. It just roughs it up, and then you that's what it sticks. It opens the pores of the concrete. It's a whole thing. And uh so I lucked out on one. The other one, I did the exact same thing. It was different kind of paint, same color, but uh I didn't let it cure enough. And uh the first car that went in there, the paint stuck to the tires. Pulled it right up off the floor.

Jeff Dziekan 20:23

Yeah, well, you could go to like a you could go to a paint place. You can go to your local hardware store and buy a garage. A gallon? Five gallon.

Don Armstrong 20:30

Well, you can buy five.

Jeff Dziekan 20:31

You can.

Don Armstrong 20:31

But I bought it in the one gallon, and it took two gallons to do the the garage regular two-car garage floor. And uh it was now it's up to $200 a gallon.

Jeff Dziekan 20:41

Yeah, well, like I said, $3,500 to have somebody do it, and you know, it's professionally done, but you've got to be out of your garage for a few days. It's not like you put it down, and in two hours you get you're done. Well, then that's the other thing.

Don Armstrong 20:50

So you've got all your junk in the garage and all of the tool boxes and all of that stuff. Where are you gonna put it? Well, you know where I put it? Front porch.

Jeff Dziekan 21:00

You take the transmission out of the garage, you put it in the bathtub.

Don Armstrong 21:02

Well, there's that. Yes, I I've done all of those things. You know, it's it's it's a process.

Jeff Dziekan 21:08

It is, and they look nice, don't get me wrong. I had a neighbor that did it. You can buy the gray stuff to make it look like a real concrete and all that, but you got cracks, you got divots, you got chips, you got stuff that come off of there.

Mike Marrs 21:17

All that your house settles exactly.

Don Armstrong 21:20

Yeah. Well, if you know, if if the if the garage floor is cracked, might want to get that fixed first. Yeah, there's that you can fill it in with something.

Then you got to keep it fixed. That's the problem.

Don Armstrong 21:30

Yeah. And let the rest of the house just go ahead and sink and have the bricks fall off the side of it.

But by God, the garage will be pretty pretty floor.

Texas Driving Destinations Near Houston

Mike Marrs 21:38

All right, time now for driving destinations, Mr. Morris. Yes, sir. Got a few things here that we thought maybe that uh some areas that may not have quite noticed, or you may have missed them. First one up is going to be Belleville and Newman's Castle. Now, this is uh one of those places that you may not believe that this is really here destination, it's an easy small town. Drive, oh, it's a small town and it's an easy drive. But there is where you're going to find Newman's Castle. And this gives it a real centerpiece. Uh, it's got a drawbridge, it's got a moat, a courtyard, and you can even take guided tours. And of course, you can go downtown Belleville and have lunch and have a complete family day trip out of it. And it's only about an hour and 15 minutes away. But the castle is what will get your attention when you get there. Uh, the second thing is going to be San Felipe de Austin. That's my Spanish accent there. This is one of the favorite places you can go to because it's close, it's got a relaxed day, and it's got a story a lot of Houston families may not know, particularly if you're new to the Houston area. It preserves Stephen F. Austin's original Texas colony. It's got a visitor center in it, it's got exhibits, and it's got a reconstructed town site. This is kind of like they tried to make it like it used to be. So uh you can combine it with a trip to Belleville or even Seely for lunch and browsing and uh kind of make it more than just a quick stop to go by and see what's going on because they do have a lot of activities, a lot of people doing things there that you can watch to see how they did it back in the day. Then, if another place you can do is head east towards the Trinity River, uh you get a combination of Texas street history and the Gulf Coast scenery. Fort Anouac was important in the early roles leading up to the Texas Revolution. Now, this is where the park now is, offers a fishing and birding pier. It's got natural areas and views overlooking the water. Now, this is a less obvious Houston destination, and it fits kind of the idea that you're looking for someplace new, you want someplace to go, but you don't want to go too far, but spend the day and check the schedule because they do have a lot of activities going on here during the year as well. Then if you want to go a little further over towards East Texas, go to the Big Thicket Natural Preserve. Now, this is you're really going to get out of the Houston traffic. You're going to get in the East Texas Forest because uh you get over near Coont. Now, this is where you're going to find it. It's a small town, uh, wide spot in the road. Best I remember, it's got two red lights now. And uh, but they've got a lot of areas that go out through the ecosystems, and the visitor center is where you can really choose where you want to go because they've got so many choices. They've got junior ranger program that's set up for their kids. So if you're close enough that you can make regular trips out here and really get involved and get away from the wide or the the concrete world to get out into the woods. The next place we've got on it, it would be the San Jacinto Battleground and the Lynchburg Ferry. Now, if you're in Houston, it's hard, you know, you're bound to have heard about it, but still, it's a neat place to go out to because they've got the battlefield, they got the museum. You can take uh the Lynchburg Ferry still run.

Guys, yes, it does. It's the oldest running ferry in the state of Texas.

Well, I thought I'd read someplace that it stopped, but I've got to be. Yeah. So you can go out here, you can get uh Texas history, you get ships, industry. Uh unfortunately they moved the battleship Texas down to Galveston, but it was a neat combination whenever it was there. So there's uh a lot of things to go out here and see. It's a pretty good-sized area that you can actually drive through a lot of it to see it. Then you can go on the last one, go up to West Columbia, Varner Hogg Plantation. Now, I heard about this whenever I first came back, moved down here to Texas, and there was we're weird stories, but it's uh another historic place, and you can go to the Varner Hogg Plantation. Now, he was a governor of Texas. This plantation's 200 years old, and you got a lot of ranching and oil, and you can go through the historic property and see all the historic aspects of it. Now, it's uh good for people with older children because there's a lot of things that they can read and see and do over in Brazilia County. And one thing I wanted to mention whenever I came down here, people were telling me about this place, and they were telling me that uh James Hogg, the governor, named his two children. One of them he named Ima Hog, and the other one was Eurahog. That's right. And and I will say I've done the research, and Europe was not a real thing. Ima was, poor girl.

Yeah, if they did that today, she would be in big trouble. Anyway, that's the place.
