Pick A Direction And Hit A Festival This October

Your next great fall drive might be closer than you think. We’re scanning the calendar and calling out the most tempting October weekend destinations across Texas, plus a couple of easy hops into Lake Charles, so you can point the car toward something fun instead of staring at another “what should we do” group text.

We start with early October favorites and smart day-trip picks, including Fredericksburg Oktoberfest, Round Top’s Wine and Whiskey Weekend, and Eastland’s Ripfest, where a Texas legend shares the weekend with an annual car show. If you like mixing travel with a bit of local history, we also flag Hogtoberfest at the Varner Hogg Plantation State Historic Site, then round out the first-Saturday energy with Huntsville’s Fair on the Square and Denison’s downtown fall festival.

Next, we look ahead to the following weekends so you can plan with intention. Oktoberfest Beaumont brings free admission, live music, food, beer, a wine garden, and plenty for kids at Rogers Park. Lake Charles adds a Fall Fest and Car Show with a fall market, vintage cars, vendors, and that perfect Saturday-morning coffee-and-stroll vibe. Mid October gets especially stacked with Galveston’s Arktoberfest juried fine art festival and the Galveston Railroad Museum’s Caboose Fest, plus Chuck Fest in Lake Charles and the Houston Filipino Street Festival for anyone craving culture and unforgettable street food.

If you want practical road trip ideas, festival dates, and can’t-miss highlights all in one place, hit play, then subscribe, share the episode with a friend who loves a weekend drive, and leave us a review. Where are you headed first?

Quick Setup For Weekend Drives

Mike Marrs

Welcome back to In Wheel Time. Now, if you're looking for somewhere to point the car towards this weekend, there's a lot of festivals going on. So we're going to run down a few things that are going on this weekend, October the 3rd and the 4th. And then we're going to look at a few things that are coming out a little bit further as we look at where the roads can take us.

Oct 2 To 4 Festivals And Car Shows

Mike Marrs

We're going to start off with Fredericksburg Oktoberfest. Of course, it's October. October the 2nd through the 4th, Saturday until from 10 a.m. until midnight. It's a great place to go and celebrate Octoberfest up in Fredericksburg. Then we're going to go down to Round Top Wine and Whiskey Weekend. Of course, this is in Round Top. Kind of a little different approach to the October road trip in that it's wine and whiskey. So if you're not really a beer person, then October 2 through 4, you got plenty of things you can do. And there is a classic car show in the town square on Saturday. Check out Visit Round Top, Texas, if you want more information on this event. Then we got an interesting name here, Ripfest Eastland. Now this celebrates the legend of old Rip. This was the horned hog supposedly discovered alive inside the courthouse cornerstone decades after being sealed there. So this takes place on October the 3rd and the 4th. And uh 41st annual Brian's car show is going on same weekend, same location. So you got plenty of cars and festivals to deal with there. Then we're going to go over to something a little more different, Hogtoberfest. October the 3rd. This is a one-day event. Now this is at the Varner Hogg Plantation State Historic Site. Got a lot of historic uh things going on, places to see and stuff to visit some more of Texas history right here. Now you can uh run up to Huntsville, you can go up there to the fair on the square. It's another traditional Texas fall destination. Takes place the first Saturday in October every year. So put it on your calendar for next year as well as this Saturday. Then if you're want to go on over to the fall festival at Denison, Saturday, October the 3rd, in downtown Denison, this is the 39th year for that

event. But then, of course, like we say, if you want to look at a little more planning going out next weekend, then we're gonna take and go out to October the 10th. Now, Rogers Park in Beaumont is home to the Oktoberfest Beaumont. You don't have to go very far for this one if you're in East Texas. It's the 11th annual Beaumont October, Rogers Park, October the 10th, 2 until 8 p.m. So it's going to cool down a little bit in the evening. Admission is free, live music through the afternoon, food, beer. I've got a wine garden for the adults, and um a little area for the kids. Get to do some interactive entertainment, some reptiles, rock climbing, face painting, things that like kids like to do when they go out and spend the day in the park. Then we're going to go over to from there, we're going to go down near State 10 to the east, Lake Charles Fall Fest and Car Show. Now, this is where the Fall Fest, Fall Market, and Car Show is on Saturday morning, October the 10th from 8 a.m. till noon in the historic city hall. This is all part of the downtown Lake Charles area. It's a free fall market. Got a vintage car show, local vendors, got live music and coffee, of course, Saturday morning. There's also the show and shine area under the Oaks on Kirby Street. Now, this is close enough to the Southeast Texas. You know, even out of Houston, jump on here to State 10 and run over there. It's an easy Saturday morning road trip over to Lake Charles.

Galveston Art And Railroad Fun

Mike Marrs

If you're looking for a reason to head down to Galveston in the fall, October 17 and 18 just might be your ticket. It is the Arktoberfest in Galveston. The 29th annual Oktoberfest takes over the historic Downtown Cultural Arts District Center. Today, 17th and 18th of October, it is a juried fine art festival. They have over 120 artists from around the country coming out and displaying some of their work. They also have some live music, food, demonstrations, and hands-on activities. So instead of just walking around and visiting the booth, you can actually talk to the artist and kind of get an idea of how some of their work is created. If you're into that uh painting, that type of painting, you absolutely want to make this festival part of a full day on Galveston. Then October the 17th, Caboose Fest. While you're down in Galveston, there's another reason to be down there for that day. The Galveston Railroad Museum hosts caboose fest. Now, this is a hoot nanny and hay rides going on from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. You're going to find the caboose hay rides, you're going to find a pumpkin patch, you've got a vendor marketplace, games, live entertainment food, a pie contest. Come and get some pie. Everybody loves pie. And there's even a chicken wing eating contest. Now the museum exhibits remain open during the festival as well. So you combine this with uh Art Toberfest, and you've got enough to keep everybody happy for a weekend trip down to Galveston. Another little point to reminder here: this same area, November the 13th through December the 23rd, you could go here to experience the Polar Express. So they've got a lot of things going on down in Galveston to keep on your

calendar. Also on October the 17th, back over to Lake Charles, Chuck Fest. Not sure, I just like that name. Chuck Fest in Lake Charles. Downtown Lake Charles on Saturday, October the 17th, with a celebration about Louisiana food, music, art, and culture. Now, this is a free festival. It runs from noon until 11 p.m. So you got plenty of time in the evening to enjoy the evening, the cooler weather, and uh particularly with the live evening entertainment. Then also, if you're in Houston, you don't want to make the road trip over to Louisiana or East Texas, you can go to the Houston Filipino Street Festival. Now, this is at Constellation Field out in Sugarland. This is the baseball park out in Sugarland on October the 17th. Now, it is considered the largest Filipino celebration in Texas, and it brings together a lot of traditional music. You got dances, art, cultural displays, and there's a lot of Filipino street food. Now, it's an interesting destination because of the location. It's plenty, it's wide open, lots of room to go around, and it's an opportunity to spend a Saturday experiencing the food, music, and traditions of another culture without ever leaving Houston.
