Looking for an honest truck review with real numbers and a big-picture take on where the market’s heading? We put the 2025 Ford F-150 STX SuperCrew 4x4 through its paces and share what matters: towing capacity, payload, highway manners, and the surprising value packed into a lower-trim workhorse. The 5.0L V8 and 10-speed deliver confident power and direct steering, while the standard 12-inch screen, LED lighting, and practical 60/40 rear seat storage make daily life easier. We dig into fuel economy, pricing that ranges from budget-friendly to nicely equipped, and how the STX compares to Ram 1500, Toyota Tundra, and Chevy Silverado. Then we tee up a future compare with the F-150 King Ranch hybrid to show how far the lineup stretches.

We also tell a one-of-a-kind story from GM’s Janesville days: a tiny bar so close to the assembly plant that workers hopped a fence for lunch beers. It outlasted the factory before redevelopment finally erased it, making space for a proposed $8B data center. It’s a vivid look at how car culture shapes communities—and how those spaces evolve.

Market reality gets equal airtime. EV registrations slipped for the first time in years, and we unpack why: price sensitivity, incentive changes, and charging friction that push mainstream buyers toward hybrids. We talk brand-by-brand turbulence, Tesla’s smaller dip, Cadillac’s surprising pop from a low base, and Toyota’s patient strategy that prizes reliability, hybrids, and measured rollouts. Plus, a rapid-fire racing calendar—NHRA in Gainesville, F1 drama over energy-saving race formats, IndyCar on a tight oval, and NASCAR weekend viewing—so your motorsports schedule is set.

If you care about trucks, performance, reliability, and the shifting auto landscape, this one connects the dots with numbers, stories, and straight talk. Hit play, then subscribe, share with a fellow gearhead, and leave a quick review with your take: are you leaning V8, hybrid, or EV next?

00:00:00.560 --> 00:00:02.959
Welcome to another In Wheel Time podcast.

00:00:02.959 --> 00:00:11.919
This is your place for all things automotive the Award Red MW5Card talk show.

00:00:11.919 --> 00:00:13.039
Coming up, Mr.

00:00:13.039 --> 00:00:16.320
Mars reviews the Ford F-150 Super Crew.

00:00:16.320 --> 00:00:17.519
Later.

00:00:17.519 --> 00:00:20.079
This is it's this is his FL show.

00:00:20.079 --> 00:00:22.719
Later, Mars has this week in auto history.

00:00:22.719 --> 00:00:27.440
Jeff has the racing calendar, and I'll just kind of take up the fat 40.

00:00:27.440 --> 00:00:30.879
I got the mop and bucket ready, so I'll figure out some jobs.

00:00:30.879 --> 00:00:33.920
How to get along with Mike Out of this world, Mars.

00:00:33.920 --> 00:00:36.560
We always need more Jeff's Seeker, Chief Engineer David Ainsley.

00:00:36.560 --> 00:00:38.000
I'm Don Armstrong.

00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:44.240
Thanks so much for joining us today here on the In Real Time Car Talk Show.

00:00:44.240 --> 00:00:46.240
I got a couple of stories I'm going to do.

00:00:46.240 --> 00:00:47.039
We're going to get to Mr.

00:00:47.039 --> 00:00:49.039
Mars here first, though, because Mr.

00:00:49.039 --> 00:01:01.520
Mars has a um a special review of the Ford F-150 Super Crew, but just to let you know what I'm going to talk about, I'm going to talk about a bar in Wisconsin.

00:01:01.520 --> 00:01:08.239
And you say, well, what the hell does that have to do with inwheel time and anything else?

00:01:08.239 --> 00:01:14.239
Well, uh, this one got bulldozed this week.

00:01:14.239 --> 00:01:15.120
Oh no.

00:01:15.120 --> 00:01:20.079
So um but we are going to do a story about it.

00:01:20.079 --> 00:01:21.439
I saw it.

00:01:21.439 --> 00:01:26.799
Uh my brother, my brother worked at the General Motors Janesville assembly plant.

00:01:26.799 --> 00:01:29.200
And so um I'm familiar with it.

00:01:29.200 --> 00:01:33.599
I I never was inside of it, but some interesting stories come from it.

00:01:33.599 --> 00:01:34.239
All right.

00:01:34.239 --> 00:01:35.840
First up, though, let's get Mr.

00:01:35.840 --> 00:01:38.480
Marrs's review of the Ford F-150, Mike.

00:01:38.799 --> 00:01:39.359
Yes, sir.

00:01:39.359 --> 00:01:43.920
We're talking about the 2025 Ford F-150 4x4.

00:01:43.920 --> 00:01:47.840
It's a super crew with the STX package on it.

00:01:47.840 --> 00:01:53.599
Now, this is the 14th generation of the F-150, long-standing big seller.

00:01:53.599 --> 00:01:57.439
This was introduced in 2021 for this uh generation of it.

00:01:57.439 --> 00:02:00.480
The final assembly plant was in Dearborn, Michigan.

00:02:00.480 --> 00:02:10.800
It actually comes available six standard trim levels: the XL, the STX, XLT, the Lariat Platinum, and then you get the King Ranch.

00:02:10.800 --> 00:02:13.840
Now you got two more: the Trimmer, the Raptor, the Raptor R.

00:02:13.840 --> 00:02:16.159
They're all kind of out by themselves on it.

00:02:16.159 --> 00:02:19.919
But the really interesting thing about this is you got the six different trim levels.

00:02:19.919 --> 00:02:22.719
All six of them you can get three different cab levels.

00:02:22.719 --> 00:02:29.120
All six of them can get six or three different bed lengths, and then all six of them you can get your choice of six engines.

00:02:29.120 --> 00:02:35.199
So there's like 70 or 80 combinations that you can put together to find you an F-150 that you want.

00:02:35.199 --> 00:02:42.719
Now we are in the STX Super Crew, so this is down in the lower trim levels, which we don't get very often out of the press fleet.

00:02:42.719 --> 00:02:44.960
So I was kind of interested to see how it worked out.

00:02:44.960 --> 00:02:47.680
It is five passenger cloth seats.

00:02:47.680 --> 00:02:53.840
Up front, we had the LED reflector headlamps, had LED fog lamps, got a power tailgate lock.

00:02:53.840 --> 00:02:57.360
We were rolling on some really nice 22-inch aluminum wheels.

00:02:57.360 --> 00:03:02.479
And just for future reference, it comes with a 36-gallon fuel tank on it.

00:03:02.479 --> 00:03:04.639
Fill that baby up once in a while.

00:03:04.639 --> 00:03:10.719
Now the interior, we had the 12-inch, all of the F-150s now come with a 12-inch center static screen.

00:03:10.719 --> 00:03:14.000
That's just standard across the trim levels, the whole line.

00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:17.199
We had the rear view camera, so it makes it really nice to be able to have that.

00:03:17.199 --> 00:03:22.960
Now, because we were in the STX, we had the column shifter, not the console shifter.

00:03:22.960 --> 00:03:26.080
We also had to use a key, not a push button.

00:03:26.080 --> 00:03:27.199
So this was kind of dangerous.

00:03:27.680 --> 00:03:28.639
Are you complaining?

00:03:28.879 --> 00:03:32.639
No, no, I'm saying that this is kind of a stripper model, but it was kind of nice to get in.

00:03:32.960 --> 00:03:33.439
I like it.

00:03:33.439 --> 00:03:34.560
I like that stuff.

00:03:34.800 --> 00:03:35.759
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:03:35.759 --> 00:03:41.039
Uh, it did have the front center console, and it's a black STX cloth seats.

00:03:41.039 --> 00:03:43.759
The front seat was a 40 with a console and a 40.

00:03:43.759 --> 00:03:48.240
The rear seat is a fold-up 60/40 that has underseat storage.

00:03:48.240 --> 00:04:00.159
So now this is a pickup that if you're looking for a pickup, if you don't want need all the leather and you don't need all the high-end stuff, I don't think you telling me what I don't need is what I don't need.

00:04:00.159 --> 00:04:03.680
I don't need that either.

00:04:03.680 --> 00:04:08.080
And the thing is, it had the 5.0 liter V8 under the hood.

00:04:08.080 --> 00:04:13.759
So we had 400 horsepower up to around 6,000 RPM, had a 10-speed automatic transmission.

00:04:13.759 --> 00:04:14.159
Nice.

00:04:14.159 --> 00:04:17.600
So it ran well, and this was a great driving truck.

00:04:17.839 --> 00:04:18.879
Did you bring that over here?

00:04:18.879 --> 00:04:19.519
Yeah, you did.

00:04:19.519 --> 00:04:20.160
Yeah, I did.

00:04:20.160 --> 00:04:21.360
That was that one that drove over there.

00:04:21.360 --> 00:04:23.519
That's a good-looking pickup truck, I have to admit.

00:04:23.519 --> 00:04:23.759
Yeah.

00:04:23.920 --> 00:04:24.879
And it worked out.

00:04:24.879 --> 00:04:28.160
Ken Peabody, the Ford Press Fleet Manager, did a wonderful job.

00:04:28.160 --> 00:04:28.879
He got that one.

00:04:28.879 --> 00:04:30.000
I got a different vehicle.

00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:32.959
This week I've got the King Ranch version hybrid.

00:04:32.959 --> 00:04:37.759
So it makes for a really nice comparison versus the two different trim levels.

00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:41.120
Hey, are you gonna do either any one of those next week?

00:04:41.839 --> 00:04:46.000
Um I'm gonna I was gonna do the Mustang next week, but I can do the Ford hybrid.

00:04:46.160 --> 00:04:55.680
Well, because the only reason I say that is because I've got the Ram 1500 Longhorn Edition sitting in the driveway, $86,000 worth of pickup truck.

00:04:55.680 --> 00:04:56.319
Yeah.

00:04:56.319 --> 00:04:57.040
Yeah, yeah.

00:04:57.040 --> 00:04:58.720
And it's rodeo time, baby.

00:05:00.160 --> 00:05:02.800
We'll do the King Ranch um F-150 then.

00:05:02.959 --> 00:05:03.680
All right then.

00:05:04.240 --> 00:05:15.279
And uh okay, and the one we've got the STX back to it, and uh you quick enough right, it can tow tow tow 12,700 pounds and it'll haul sixteen hundred and eighty-five pounds.

00:05:15.279 --> 00:05:17.040
Again, this is a half-ton truck.

00:05:17.040 --> 00:05:22.639
Now, the EPA says you should be looking for 16 in the city, 24 out on the highway, 19 combined.

00:05:22.639 --> 00:05:29.120
I drove it around town a lot, obviously, 220.3 miles, uh, other than the quick run over to your place.

00:05:29.120 --> 00:05:32.079
So I averaged 16.8 the week I got it.

00:05:32.079 --> 00:05:36.480
But this is a really nice driving truck with plenty of power.

00:05:36.480 --> 00:05:41.600
It's got direct steering, and so it really drives and handles really well when you get out on the road.

00:05:41.600 --> 00:05:45.920
I really like to drive in this truck, particularly when I start looking at the price point on it.

00:05:45.920 --> 00:05:51.680
Now the base trim price for the uh STX is $51,230.

00:05:51.680 --> 00:06:01.519
We had a few options, pushed it up to $61,780, which in the grand scheme of things, that's not a bad price for a pickup truck.

00:06:01.519 --> 00:06:07.279
But if you really get into the stripper stripper model, you can get this thing down to $38,800.

00:06:07.279 --> 00:06:11.759
Now, again, uh, subcaps.

00:06:11.759 --> 00:06:13.920
Yeah, this is the bottom line.

00:06:13.920 --> 00:06:20.000
Now, the RAM $1500, if you're looking at something comparable, you're looking at something that started about $40,275.

00:06:20.000 --> 00:06:22.480
The Tundra, $40,900.

00:06:22.480 --> 00:06:25.199
I actually met somebody that drives the Tundra the other day.

00:06:25.199 --> 00:06:28.240
And then you can look at the Chevy Silver Auto for $40,300.

00:06:28.240 --> 00:06:30.639
Again, it's back like you were talking about the other review.

00:06:30.639 --> 00:06:35.600
Pricing in in that category is pretty competitive whenever you get to looking at them.

00:06:35.600 --> 00:06:46.800
Now, uh I also found out that uh that I meant to mention that you can get the STX Super Crew two-wheel drive down for $36,000 if you really want to push it.

00:06:46.800 --> 00:06:49.120
But this is a really nice driving truck.

00:06:49.120 --> 00:06:54.720
It is a pickup truck, it's not a luxury truck, but it will serve your purposes really well.

00:06:54.720 --> 00:07:00.240
Great driver, and I enjoyed it, and thanks to Ken Peabody for letting me have that for the week.

00:07:00.240 --> 00:07:01.040
Cool.

00:07:01.199 --> 00:07:02.800
We love you, Ken Peabody.

00:07:02.800 --> 00:07:06.319
We've known Ken Peabody forever.

00:07:06.319 --> 00:07:07.680
Long time.

00:07:07.680 --> 00:07:08.399
Long time.

00:07:08.399 --> 00:07:09.519
Anyway, great guy.

00:07:09.519 --> 00:07:11.279
He's up in the Dallas area now.

00:07:11.279 --> 00:07:14.399
He was down here for a while, lived down here, lived down in Galveston.

00:07:14.399 --> 00:07:16.480
I said, I just can't, I can't.

00:07:16.480 --> 00:07:18.319
I I've got too much to do up here.

00:07:18.319 --> 00:07:20.639
Okay, well, go back up there then.

00:07:20.639 --> 00:07:21.600
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:07:21.600 --> 00:07:24.079
We'll see you on the uh Texas Muscle Car Club Challenge.

00:07:24.079 --> 00:07:24.879
There you go.

00:07:24.879 --> 00:07:26.879
Okay, here's the story I wanted to tell you.

00:07:26.879 --> 00:07:27.759
Ready?

00:07:27.759 --> 00:07:51.439
The General Motors plant in Janesville, Wisconsin, cousin Steve still lives in Janesville, had a bar so close to its front doors that the automaker tried to discourage lunchtime beer runs by building tall fences and repeatedly trying to buy out its owner who worked on the line at the Janesville Assembly plant.

00:07:51.439 --> 00:07:55.519
When he refused to sell, GM fired him.

00:07:55.519 --> 00:08:08.639
The watering hole known as Zackhouse and Zocks ultimately outlasted the plant, which ended production in 2008 and met the wrecking ball in 2018.

00:08:08.639 --> 00:08:16.879
But it too became rubble February 26th as part of the latest effort to redevelop the vacant GM property.

00:08:16.879 --> 00:08:20.639
And by the way, that GM property is huge, it's an assembly plant.

00:08:20.639 --> 00:08:22.319
You can imagine how big it is.

00:08:22.319 --> 00:08:28.959
An eight billion dollar data center is proposed for the 240-acre site.

00:08:28.959 --> 00:08:31.759
And it's kind of just outside of town.

00:08:31.759 --> 00:08:33.039
It's in a neighborhood.

00:08:33.039 --> 00:08:37.440
Now, granted, it is more of an industrial neighborhood, but wow, okay.

00:08:37.440 --> 00:08:39.519
We can still serve lunch beer.

00:08:39.519 --> 00:08:42.559
Well, it's gone now, so you can forget that.

00:08:42.559 --> 00:08:51.440
It's just sad, Andrew Sigwell, who sold the business to new owners in 2020, told the Janesville Gazette it was part of history.

00:08:51.440 --> 00:09:03.919
The 900 square foot bar, which GM employee Roy Zackow purchased in 20 uh in 1961 as a place to eat lunch with his co-workers, originally was in a residential neighborhood.

00:09:03.919 --> 00:09:10.080
As the automaker bought up nearby properties to expand over the years, Zakow was the loan holdup.

00:09:10.080 --> 00:09:16.000
In 1987, GM flew him to Detroit and offered $200,000.

00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:23.679
They didn't want us anywhere in the neighborhood, Jerry Zackow, Roy's widow and Sigwell's grandmother, told the Gazette in 2012.

00:09:23.679 --> 00:09:28.240
He came back saying, Those bastards will never get the bar.

00:09:28.240 --> 00:09:41.519
Eventually, the business, so reliant on Ganesville assembly that it typically closed on weekends in other days when the plant was dark, was surrounded by the GM parking lot.

00:09:41.519 --> 00:09:48.639
Some workers parked next to the fence so they could climb over it and get in and out faster on their break.

00:09:48.639 --> 00:09:54.159
After GM abandoned Janesville, Sigwell kept the bar going by attracting a younger clientele.

00:09:54.159 --> 00:09:57.200
He photographed the adjacent demolition with a drone.

00:09:57.200 --> 00:10:07.679
His successors, Andy and Desiree Wilson, held open mic nights in Green Bay Packers Potlucks, and the Janesville Deaf Society adopted the bar as its monthly gathering place.

00:10:07.679 --> 00:10:17.519
Last summer, after previous plans to fill the desolate GM site with an industrial park where housing fell through, the city forced the Wilsons out through Deminent Domain.

00:10:17.519 --> 00:10:21.360
They threw a huge Zox end of days party.

00:10:21.360 --> 00:10:23.279
You might build another factory.

00:10:23.279 --> 00:10:30.960
There'll be other beautiful bars or gathering spots, but never again will there be one in the parking lot of a commercial property in a space like this.

00:10:30.960 --> 00:10:34.240
An attendee who flew in from Minnesota told the Gazette.

00:10:34.240 --> 00:10:43.039
There's something about knowing you're standing on ground where the plant was being built, and Zax kept going after it was gone.

00:10:43.039 --> 00:10:46.080
That kind of uniqueness you will never see again.

00:10:46.080 --> 00:10:47.360
Goodbye, Zocks.

00:10:47.360 --> 00:10:49.679
We had one across the street from Fisher Body.

00:10:49.840 --> 00:10:51.759
You had to walk across 4th Street, and there was a bar.

00:10:51.759 --> 00:10:52.720
It was a bigger bar though.

00:10:52.720 --> 00:10:55.679
I mean, and it was not closed on weekends.

00:10:55.679 --> 00:10:57.600
It was a jump in place.

00:10:57.600 --> 00:11:00.240
And yes, people would go over there for the lunch break.

00:11:00.240 --> 00:11:00.559
Yeah.

00:11:00.559 --> 00:11:02.080
Having a beer and a burger.

00:11:02.080 --> 00:11:02.960
Even in the evening.

00:11:02.960 --> 00:11:05.039
Well, more like beer or whatever.

00:11:05.039 --> 00:11:05.360
Yeah.

00:11:05.360 --> 00:11:08.240
But yeah, it was across the street from I wonder.

00:11:08.240 --> 00:11:09.039
Is it still whatever?

00:11:09.039 --> 00:11:10.960
No, well, Fisher Body was leveled.

00:11:10.960 --> 00:11:11.600
It's it's gone.

00:11:11.600 --> 00:11:12.799
There's something else with it.

00:11:12.799 --> 00:11:13.279
Yeah.

00:11:13.279 --> 00:11:16.559
But yeah, back in the day, this was in the mid-70s.

00:11:16.559 --> 00:11:20.559
Yeah, you walk across the street, have a couple of shots in a beer, and go back to work.

00:11:21.120 --> 00:11:23.120
No wonder the door was crooked when it was a bigger one.

00:11:23.120 --> 00:11:23.919
Fridays and Mondays.

00:11:24.879 --> 00:11:26.159
Fridays and Mondays, don't buy a car.

00:11:26.159 --> 00:11:26.960
I was built on that.

00:11:26.960 --> 00:11:27.919
That was the thing back then.

00:11:27.919 --> 00:11:29.679
Built on Friday or Monday, don't buy a car.

00:11:29.919 --> 00:11:33.120
You used to irritate me when I would go to lunch down by the main office building.

00:11:33.120 --> 00:11:34.240
We'd go to lunch.

00:11:34.240 --> 00:11:37.360
The guys that worked in the office building wouldn't be in there drinking beer.

00:11:37.360 --> 00:11:41.279
I had a driving position with the company, no drinking beer at lunchtime.

00:11:41.279 --> 00:11:44.080
And it'd just be you sit there drinking your iced tea while they're drinking beer.

00:11:44.320 --> 00:11:46.559
And you're trying to make up for lost time now, aren't you, Marks?

00:11:46.879 --> 00:11:48.080
I'm doing my best.

00:11:51.039 --> 00:11:51.679
Yeah.

00:11:52.080 --> 00:11:59.039
Well, you know, it wouldn't be an in-wheel time show unless I razzed uh the electric vehicle uh department.

00:11:59.039 --> 00:12:00.080
Here we go.

00:12:00.080 --> 00:12:08.480
Electric vehicle registrations fell last year for the first time in at least a decade following the repeal of the federal EV tax credit, although the drop was modest.

00:12:08.480 --> 00:12:17.440
EV registrations declined 0.4% compared with a year earlier to 1.3 million vehicles according to SP Global Mobility.

00:12:17.440 --> 00:12:19.440
The data does not include hybrids.

00:12:19.440 --> 00:12:26.159
EV share of the light vehicle market fell to 7.8% from 8% a year earlier, the data showed.

00:12:26.159 --> 00:12:34.720
But for all vehicles, regardless of fuel type, 2025 registrations rose 2.2% to 16.25 million vehicles.

00:12:34.720 --> 00:12:42.320
SP Global Mobility uh goes back to 2016 when Tom Libby, an analyst for the company government estimates, showed U.S.

00:12:42.320 --> 00:12:45.919
EV sales rising each year in the early 2010s.

00:12:45.919 --> 00:12:46.559
U.S.

00:12:46.559 --> 00:12:54.080
registration data serves as a proxy for sales because some EV makers, including Tesla, don't separate U.S.

00:12:54.080 --> 00:12:58.799
deliveries from global numbers and don't report on a monthly basis anymore.

00:12:58.799 --> 00:13:06.559
Although congressional repeal of the 7500 EV tax credit helped trigger a sharp drop in EV sales in the final months of 2025.

00:13:06.559 --> 00:13:11.120
The slowdown in demand actually began in 2024, according to Libby.

00:13:11.120 --> 00:13:17.039
A key one is price.

00:13:17.039 --> 00:13:26.639
Even with generous government and automaker incentives, high EV sticker prices remained a hurdle for mainstream buyers who gravitated toward hybrids instead.

00:13:26.639 --> 00:13:29.600
The customers who wanted an EV got an EV.

00:13:29.600 --> 00:13:35.360
When you get beyond the early adopters, there are barriers like charging infrastructure issues.

00:13:35.360 --> 00:13:36.000
No.

00:13:36.000 --> 00:13:44.080
So here's some of the figures.

00:13:44.080 --> 00:13:44.639
You ready?

00:13:44.639 --> 00:13:48.879
I don't want to bore you with all this, but Ford for instance.

00:13:48.879 --> 00:13:51.519
EV sales down 61%.

00:13:51.519 --> 00:13:52.720
Ford.

00:13:52.720 --> 00:13:58.000
Eeve sales down 53%.

00:13:58.000 --> 00:13:59.600
Here's a big one.

00:13:59.600 --> 00:14:01.600
Chevrolet down 73%.

00:14:01.600 --> 00:14:06.000
BMW, Kia, 53, 54%.

00:14:06.000 --> 00:14:08.639
Wow, here's one.

00:14:08.639 --> 00:14:09.519
Honda.

00:14:09.519 --> 00:14:11.679
Eeve sales down 87%.

00:14:11.679 --> 00:14:13.440
Are you still making them?

00:14:13.440 --> 00:14:14.000
Why?

00:14:14.000 --> 00:14:14.879
You're not selling them.

00:14:15.279 --> 00:14:16.000
They were a leader in that.

00:14:16.000 --> 00:14:17.279
Honda and Toyota.

00:14:18.240 --> 00:14:20.320
Mercedes-Benz down 88%.

00:14:20.320 --> 00:14:25.279
Nissan down 89%.

00:14:25.600 --> 00:14:26.720
They got the leaf, remember?

00:14:26.720 --> 00:14:30.720
Okay, but how many have they built to get that percentage that they're not making it?

00:14:30.720 --> 00:14:32.320
Did they build a thousand of them?

00:14:33.200 --> 00:14:34.799
I don't have those figures, but that's a good point.

00:14:34.799 --> 00:14:35.840
I understand what you're saying.

00:14:35.840 --> 00:14:36.480
Yeah.

00:14:36.480 --> 00:14:37.519
But here's one.

00:14:37.519 --> 00:14:38.399
Accurate.

00:14:38.399 --> 00:14:41.919
EV sales down 97%.

00:14:43.519 --> 00:14:45.200
Are they including the hybrids in that?

00:14:45.200 --> 00:14:46.320
No, they're not strictly.

00:14:46.320 --> 00:14:49.600
No, it's just purely a you either you got to charge it some way or another.

00:14:50.639 --> 00:14:59.360
Tesla, the market leader, outpaced the overall EV market in December with a smaller 35% drop in registrations from a year earlier to 42,000 vehicles.

00:14:59.360 --> 00:15:00.960
That's still a lot of vehicles.

00:15:00.960 --> 00:15:03.919
Ford was number two EV brand in December.

00:15:03.919 --> 00:15:06.879
Registration fell 61% to 5,000.

00:15:06.879 --> 00:15:16.559
Cadillac took the number three spot for EV makers in December with registrations up at 12% to 3,694 vehicles.

00:15:19.200 --> 00:15:20.879
What number are we basing that on?

00:15:20.879 --> 00:15:21.279
Yeah.

00:15:21.840 --> 00:15:24.159
You know, it is what it is.

00:15:24.159 --> 00:15:29.679
Um look, I I don't want to see any company go belly up, but I think that they made a very bad mistake.

00:15:29.679 --> 00:15:33.120
And if you remember correctly, everybody was calling out Toyota.

00:15:33.120 --> 00:15:35.120
Well, where's Toyota in the EV race?

00:15:35.120 --> 00:15:36.960
They don't have an EV vehicle.

00:15:36.960 --> 00:15:44.799
You know, Toyota is one of those that they're they just plod and they just keep on rolling with the flow.

00:15:44.799 --> 00:15:49.440
Oh, yeah, we we'll we'll make an EV vehicle here in a couple of years.

00:15:49.440 --> 00:15:53.679
But everybody else was racing to build factories and spend billions of dollars.

00:15:54.639 --> 00:16:04.240
It's a different uh marketing, it's a different way they go about doing their business because we did a story last week of the 250,000 or 250,000 mile vehicles.

00:16:04.240 --> 00:16:09.200
But they build stuff to last, they don't jump into new and improve.

00:16:09.200 --> 00:16:12.559
Hey, let's change that widget and it'll be better, and then it's not.

00:16:12.559 --> 00:16:16.799
So they don't do that, they just stick with that widget and improve where they can.

00:16:17.440 --> 00:16:22.080
And you look at the recalls, the the amount of recalls they have uh substantiates that statement.

00:16:22.080 --> 00:16:22.799
Exactly.

00:16:22.960 --> 00:16:23.679
Exactly, Mike.

00:16:23.679 --> 00:16:24.159
Yep.

00:16:24.159 --> 00:16:24.879
Yep.

00:16:25.360 --> 00:16:27.679
Okay, uh, we're gonna take a quick break here.

00:16:27.679 --> 00:16:29.120

00:18:35.759 --> 00:18:40.400
Time now for the racing calendar, Jeffrey, sponsored by the Texas Muscle Car Club Challenge.

00:18:40.720 --> 00:18:42.240
You betcha, and guess what starting?

00:18:42.240 --> 00:18:44.240
All kinds of racing starting this week.

00:18:44.240 --> 00:18:45.359
And you got what?

00:18:45.359 --> 00:18:48.799
The NHRA, National Hot Rod Uh Racing Association.

00:18:48.799 --> 00:18:53.359
It's in Gainesville Raceway, which is the international starts.

00:18:53.359 --> 00:18:56.079
It actually started the fifth, but it goes through the eighth through tomorrow.

00:18:56.079 --> 00:18:57.200
So that's cool.

00:18:57.200 --> 00:18:58.480
All classes are running.

00:18:58.480 --> 00:19:00.480
I mean, you got bikes, you got all kinds of stuff.

00:19:00.480 --> 00:19:01.839
Uh it's gonna be fun.

00:19:01.839 --> 00:19:04.000
Then you got a Formula One series.

00:19:04.000 --> 00:19:08.240
They start uh this weekend in Australia, an Australia Grand Prix.

00:19:08.240 --> 00:19:16.720
Now, some of the things I've been seeing and watching on uh the sports channels and reading up about is that these drivers are not happy with the new car.

00:19:16.720 --> 00:19:22.880
They're calling it uh the step up from the e-class, the e-series that they run in Formula One.

00:19:22.880 --> 00:19:25.200
They're thinking it's a little bit like that.

00:19:25.200 --> 00:19:26.480
They're not pleased with it.

00:19:26.480 --> 00:19:31.759
It's more of how much uh energy can you save rather than speeding up and winning the race.

00:19:31.759 --> 00:19:33.839
So there's a lot of controversy on that.

00:19:33.839 --> 00:19:35.200
The drivers are not happy.

00:19:35.200 --> 00:19:36.720
I'm sure they're gonna work it out.

00:19:36.720 --> 00:19:39.920
And indie series starts.

00:19:39.920 --> 00:19:43.359
Well, it already started uh last week, but they're gonna be in Phoenix.

00:19:43.359 --> 00:19:46.319
I watched some of the time trials and qualifying.

00:19:46.319 --> 00:19:47.359
It's gonna be a fun race.

00:19:47.359 --> 00:19:48.400
It's a mile oval.

00:19:48.400 --> 00:19:49.759
It's gonna be fun.

00:19:49.759 --> 00:19:52.799
Uh, I think there's a rookie on the poll as I saw this morning.

00:19:52.799 --> 00:19:53.200
What?

00:19:53.200 --> 00:19:55.599
Yeah, there's gonna be a really yeah, I believe there's a rookie on the poll.

00:19:55.599 --> 00:19:56.880
I'm not no, I'll take that well.

00:19:56.880 --> 00:19:58.000
He was a rookie last year.

00:19:58.000 --> 00:20:00.319
Uh but it's gonna be a fun stuff to watch.

00:20:00.319 --> 00:20:01.119
I'm excited.

00:20:01.119 --> 00:20:07.359
I've got it actually set to record uh because it's gonna be on later later this afternoon on the Fox local channel at three o'clock.

00:20:07.359 --> 00:20:09.680
And then you got the NASCAR folks.

00:20:09.680 --> 00:20:14.960
Uh the truck series is off, but you got the O'Reilly series is going to be running today at 7.30.

00:20:14.960 --> 00:20:17.440
It's gonna be on the CW channel, those of you that get that.

00:20:17.440 --> 00:20:23.200
And then tomorrow, same thing is gonna be on FS1 for the Phoenix race for the big boys, the cup race.

00:20:23.200 --> 00:20:25.920
Not everybody gets the Fox sports channel.

00:20:26.160 --> 00:20:27.680
So uh I refuse to buy that.

00:20:27.920 --> 00:20:28.240
I understand.

00:20:28.240 --> 00:20:31.200
I'm gonna be losing my well, I'm gonna have it put in a different setup.

00:20:31.200 --> 00:20:33.440
But anyways, uh check that out.

00:20:33.440 --> 00:20:36.480
And then you've got oh, I just did the indicar, so so that's what you got.

00:20:36.480 --> 00:20:37.599
You got all kinds of stuff.

00:20:37.599 --> 00:20:44.160
You got local tracks going, uh encouraged by going out there and supporting those young drivers and those young families that uh dedicate.

00:20:44.160 --> 00:20:46.079
And the track and the track, absolutely.

00:20:46.079 --> 00:20:49.119
Go out and get yourself a hot dog and enjoy the race.

00:20:50.000 --> 00:20:50.480
Thank you, sir.

00:20:50.480 --> 00:20:51.759
Well, guess what?

00:20:51.759 --> 00:20:52.799
It's time now for Mr.

00:20:52.799 --> 00:20:53.920
Mars Famous.

00:20:53.920 --> 00:20:55.039
Or is that infamous?

00:20:55.039 --> 00:20:55.920
I think it's infamous.

00:20:55.920 --> 00:20:56.799
Infamous.

00:20:56.799 --> 00:20:58.160
This week in auto history.

00:20:58.160 --> 00:20:58.799
Michael?

00:20:58.799 --> 00:21:00.079
Infamous.

00:21:00.079 --> 00:21:02.559
Are you there?

00:21:02.880 --> 00:21:03.359
Yeah, yeah.

00:21:03.359 --> 00:21:05.599
I was trying to uh get Jeff started.

00:21:05.599 --> 00:21:06.720
There you go, Jeff.

00:21:06.720 --> 00:21:07.920
Gotcha.

00:21:07.920 --> 00:21:09.039
All right.

00:21:09.039 --> 00:21:20.960
So the worst first week of March, lots of things going on, including on March the 1st of 1941, is when you actually started seeing the development of the prototypes that became the military Jeeps.

00:21:20.960 --> 00:21:26.000
Now, these led, of course, to what we have in Jeep World now, but it was all done because of the U.S.

00:21:26.000 --> 00:21:26.480
Army.

00:21:26.480 --> 00:21:28.799
What they were trying to do is get a lightweight vehicle.

00:21:28.799 --> 00:21:35.200
Uh had a simple ladder frame, solid axles, lightweight body so that it could go just about anywhere.

00:21:35.200 --> 00:21:43.119
It had a three-speed standard transmission that we used to call with a granny gear, and it would get down and climb just about anything.

00:21:43.119 --> 00:21:48.079
Then in Mike, Mike, the top left picture, is that you doing a test on that?

00:21:48.079 --> 00:21:51.759
Well, that was that was kind of one of the test drives of the early ones.

00:21:52.079 --> 00:21:54.960
I can only imagine what the suspension looked like when it landed.

00:21:54.960 --> 00:21:57.359
I think that's an on on ramp acceleration test.

00:21:57.440 --> 00:21:59.599
Is that what you see how it's angled going up the hill?

00:22:00.240 --> 00:22:00.640
Yeah.

00:22:00.640 --> 00:22:01.759
Jumping back.

00:22:01.759 --> 00:22:02.880
I'm sorry about that.

00:22:03.119 --> 00:22:09.759
So March the second this week in 1966 is whenever Ford Motor Company produced the one millionth Mustang.

00:22:09.759 --> 00:22:16.160
Now, you gotta remember they did this in just 22 months after they first launched the pony car.

00:22:16.160 --> 00:22:18.240
I mean, everybody wanted one of these.

00:22:18.240 --> 00:22:21.119
They just sold them as fast as they could make them.

00:22:21.119 --> 00:22:23.759
And uh it's still being built today.

00:22:23.759 --> 00:22:29.359
They're still selling a lot of Mustangs, and they still kind of have that same basic look to them, amazingly.

00:22:29.359 --> 00:22:39.599
The taillights, the side panels, everything's kind of evolved, of course, but you can still tell a very distinct Mustang, and you can see exactly where its heritage came from.

00:22:39.599 --> 00:22:48.559
Then in March the 4th in 1902, the American Automobile Association was created, and uh is better known as the Triple A.

00:22:48.559 --> 00:23:05.039
And it was created to actually promote road safety and improve travel conditions for early motorists, didn't and it's kind of evolved now into uh being more for the motorist itself, not necessarily for better highways, better signage, and driver's services.

00:23:05.039 --> 00:23:09.200
So it's still an automotive advocate, but in a different perspective.

00:23:09.200 --> 00:23:10.960
And it's a good thing to have, Mike.

00:23:10.960 --> 00:23:11.759
Uh we have it.

00:23:11.759 --> 00:23:17.519
You know, it's what $90 a year and yeah, it's it's relatively cheap when you look at what else you can get.

00:23:17.519 --> 00:23:18.400
You bet.

00:23:18.400 --> 00:23:21.200
Particularly if you got kids or somebody that might need it.

00:23:21.200 --> 00:23:22.079
Exactly.

00:23:22.079 --> 00:23:30.400
Then on March the 5th of 1981, carbon fiber really made a big change in racing because this is when McLaren introduced the MP4.

00:23:30.400 --> 00:23:36.640
Now, this is the first Formula One car built on an all-carbon fiber composite chassis.

00:23:36.640 --> 00:23:45.039
Now it's amazingly, it's stronger than aluminum, and it improved the driver's safety because of the rigidity and the performance of it.

00:23:45.039 --> 00:23:52.000
And within a few seasons, it didn't take very long before all of the Formula One team drivers adapted this technology.

00:23:52.000 --> 00:23:54.160
And today it's pretty common from race cars.

00:23:54.160 --> 00:23:55.519
You can have it on some street cars.

00:23:55.519 --> 00:24:01.119
Uh BMW is notable about one of them that happens to put the carbon fiber on some of their production cars.

00:24:01.119 --> 00:24:11.759
Then in March the 6th, in Ferrari introduced the legendary Ferrari F-50 at the Geneva Motor Show.

00:24:11.759 --> 00:24:14.960
Now, this is basically a Formula One car that they built for the street.

00:24:14.960 --> 00:24:29.759
Had a naturally aspirated V-12 in it because that was derived from the racing program, had all the carbon fiber construction and the extreme performance, and it became one of the very collectible supercars of the 1990s.

00:24:29.759 --> 00:24:41.039
And uh so a lot of things came out the first week of March from Detroit, as well as uh the round the rest of the world, the Mustang and uh the carbon fiber and iconic supercars.

00:24:41.039 --> 00:24:44.240
So a lot of things in automotive history in March.

00:24:44.240 --> 00:24:45.039
Cool.

00:24:45.039 --> 00:24:45.759
That's good.

00:24:47.119 --> 00:25:05.920
Hey, get this Honda Motor Company will export two US built models to Japan for the first time in nearly four decades, reviving a strategy from its early days of American manufacturing and amid streamlined import rules and trade balance pressures.

00:25:05.920 --> 00:25:18.559
Exports of the high performance accurate integra type S and the off-road ready Honda Passport Trail Sport Elite Crossover will begin in the second half of this year, Honda said.

00:25:18.559 --> 00:25:21.119
And both models will retain the U.S.

00:25:21.119 --> 00:25:30.400
specifications, including and I don't understand this, why including left-hand drive configuration, despite Japan's right-hand drive norm.

00:25:30.880 --> 00:25:32.319
Well, who would want to buy that?

00:25:32.319 --> 00:25:33.839
In Japan, they might.

00:25:34.960 --> 00:25:41.119
I guess a hot hatch will be the first accurate branded vehicle ever sold in Japan.

00:25:41.119 --> 00:25:46.960
They don't have the accurate, even though it's a Honda, they don't have the accurate br brand in Japan.

00:25:47.200 --> 00:25:50.240
I thought that was so would you I've never driven a right-hand drive car.

00:25:50.240 --> 00:25:51.119
Have you?

00:25:51.440 --> 00:25:51.839
I have.

00:25:51.839 --> 00:25:53.759
Yeah, it's weird.

00:25:53.759 --> 00:25:59.119
You ever tried to shift a manual shift car with a right-hand drive with your left hand drive?

00:25:59.279 --> 00:26:03.279
I was gonna say Davidson, Ryan's got one now, but yeah, he's got a shifter with a left-hand drive.

00:26:03.920 --> 00:26:08.400
He's a young man, so he's you know more ambidextrous than a 40-year-old.

00:26:09.839 --> 00:26:11.119
For many reasons.

00:26:11.119 --> 00:26:37.599
Today, trade imbalances and easing of import restrictions are driving Japanese automakers to make similar moves.

00:26:37.599 --> 00:26:39.920
Toyota is pursuing exports of U.S.

00:26:39.920 --> 00:26:43.920
built vehicles, and Nissan is evaluating options.

00:26:43.920 --> 00:26:44.400
Okay.

00:26:44.400 --> 00:26:48.960
It's time now to take a quick break here on the In Wheel Time Car Talk Show.

00:26:48.960 --> 00:26:49.839

00:28:11.359 --> 00:28:12.400
