Car Insurance and Coverage Dilemmas

Speaker 1

Welcome to another In Wheel Time podcast , a 30-minute mini version of the In Wheel Time Car Show that airs live every Saturday morning 8 to 11 am Central . The In Wheel Time Car Talk Show survived the Siberian blast and we welcome you to a nice hot studio . Big talk these days is how much car insurance has gone up and the alternatives Later . Jeff , snow plows what you should know . Snow plows into what ? Well , what you should know . And Mr Mars reviews the 2025 . Is it the Arcadia that you told me , or was I right on this one ? If you don't look at the way I wrote it , it's Acadia , acadia . Thank you very much . That's from General Motors . Howdy Along with . We always need more Jeff Zekin , our chief potentate over here . Mike out of this world , mars .

Speaker 2

He's the official spell checker .

Speaker 1

Yeah , that's it . When you spell check something , it goes through Mars . Dismiss it immediately . David Ainsley is on vacation today . Our chief engineer , I'm Don Armstrong . I'm always on vacation . So glad that you could join us for our Saturday morning live broadcast and , if you're listening or watching on a podcast somewhere , thank you very much for joining us . We appreciate you too . Do we have Divya yet ? Not yet .

Speaker 3

All right .

Speaker 1

Well , I'm still we were supposed to have Divya Sangam . Maybe she'll chime in here in just a minute . She's always pretty prompt about that . She's with LendingTree LLC , which is Value Penguin by LendingTree is the name of the company . Yep , anyway , she always has wonderful information and I'm going to kind of preview what she was going to say , because if she doesn't join us we're going to have to fill 15 minutes and then we're going to be screwed , blued and tattooed . Yeah , we're going to fake it . So here's the report from Divya .

Speaker 3

Three minutes . She'll be here in three minutes .

Speaker 1

Three minutes , okay , okay . Well then , I'm not going to blow it . But the price of auto insurance , uh , in washington and california they rose . The premiums rose by over 15 percent in 2025 and we're only what a few days into the biggest rate increases in the country . Uh , american family all , allstate and Liberty Mutual are expected to raise rates by over 10% . The highest among the major insurers , usaa , progressive and Geico , will have the smallest rate increase , at least right now . The average cost of full coverage car insurance in 2025 will reach a record high of $2,101 a year , nevada $3,216 a year and Florida $3,264 a year .

Speaker 2

Let me interject something that's for one vehicle . Is that full coverage ? That's what it said .

Speaker 1

It said full coverage One vehicle and it'll overtake Michigan at $3,156 a year to become the most expensive states for car insurance . Drivers with non-traffic violations will see their premiums jump 53% on average in 2025 . With drivers in North Carolina facing the stiffest financial penalties a Drumroll 146% increase in premiums for traffic violations and dangerous driving . What is driving ?

Speaker 2

that A little pun , but what I just ?

Speaker 1

don't get it Because of the premiums that they're having to pay out on wrecks and stuff like that and inflation . They've got numbers that they've got to hit and whatever it takes to hit those numbers , you're going to pay .

Speaker 3

And last year the state of Texas granted all the insurance companies the ability to raise . Yeah , you can make a raise because of inflation , but you can't raise it more than a certain percentage . We're going to get into that . To raise , yeah , you can make a raise because of inflation , but you can't raise it more than a certain percentage .

Speaker 1

Electric vehicles are getting cheaper , so to speak , in 2025 , but insurance for new EVs will still be 23% higher than new gasoline powered cars . Not all EVs are the same . Insurance premiums for electric cars made by legacy manufacturers like Ford and Volkswagen are 25% less expensive than insurance premiums for cars manufactured by EV-only companies . Ie Tesla State of Insurance 2025 report was used for that information . Will rate hikes continue to slow down in 2026 and beyond If things continue the way they are right now ? Yes , 2026 and beyond . If things continue the way they are right now yes .

Speaker 1

However , if President Trump goes forward with his plans to impose tariffs on imported goods , insurance rate hikes will pick up again . 60% of replacement car parts are imported from other countries , like China . Higher parts costs mean higher repair prices and more expensive claims , which will result in a bigger rate hike in 2026 and beyond . So when she joins us , the first thing that I'm going to ask her is is money alone ? And who does she recommend that you go to , because you know all of the insurance companies . Oh , we'll save you 15% or more by switching .

Speaker 2

Well you just did it commercially by saying that .

Speaker 1

Yeah , well , they all say that . And so I'm thinking , because you know , I have the Corvette , all right . Well , I decided not to take collision on it . And the reason being is because when you add the collision in on a yearly basis for that car , it doesn't make sense , right , I'm willing to save the collision rate and put it in my pocket , put it in the bank , so I'll be the car's insurer , right ? If it is totaled , it's totaled , it's your loss , it's my loss , yeah . And if it's not totaled and it's repairable , I've flipped the bill for it . But I've stuck with allstate because , by going with haggerty , I have to have another car to drive and you have to prove to them that you have another car to get the collector car insurance rate because you drive it you got to prove that it's going to set .

Speaker 3

Yeah , it's not a daily right it's not a daily driver .

Speaker 1

Well , I , I don't . I drive manufacturer cars to review on this program . That doesn't count with them , no okay , and it wouldn't really .

Speaker 3

I wouldn't see why it was so I'm I'm kind of I understand what you're saying , but I calculated a little differently . Like I got two 18-year-old granddaughters .

Speaker 1

That drive your cars ?

Speaker 3

No , well , they did when they were in the shop . But their car , they have cars and you know we looked at the value of their cars . Same thing If it was you or me , I would say no , we're not going to take the full coverage , we're only going to take the liability . But because they're 18 and they're just getting started and they've bumped into a few things already , you know they're paying for full coverage , I mean , they're paying their own insurance . So I did the same thing .

Speaker 3

But because they got a job with NASA or something , I mean that's expensive $200 a month , $225 , I think for them , which I mean it is expensive For an 18-year-old at $200 , some odd dollars , a month .

Speaker 3

Yes , that's a lot of money , it is . But the point being but if they have a wreck and it's kind of borderline , you know , if you've got a $10,000 car , it don't take much to do $4,000 or $5,000 worth of damage to it . So that's the reason , you know , I suggested they keep full coverage for at least the first year or two of driving until they get to become better . Drivers have a little more experience , less likely to bump into something .

Speaker 1

Because if they have a wreck , I mean it's going to hurt something , no matter what . Well , there's that other classic car insurer and I cannot remember the name of it . It's some guy in Michigan , four of them . Is there ? Four of them ? I'm going to shop it and see if I have to have a regular car of them . I'm going to shop it and see if I have to have a regular car , because let's just say that I'm 80 and I don't drive hardly at all . I don't even own a car .

Speaker 1

I use public transportation , but I do have my collector antique car sitting out there that's over 25 years old . Why do I have to prove to you that I have another car ? Because if I use public transportation , there's no reason for me to have another car . Because if I use public transportation , there's no reason for me to have another car . That's my baby out there . I drive it very little once a month , maybe that's about it . You know , in . I bought that car in 2017 , 18 somewhere in there , and uh , and I've put on uh , 10 000 miles . I'm gonna say about 10 , 11 000 , about 10 000 miles on it . So do the math so 18 and I've put on 10,000 miles , I'm going to say about 10,000 .

Speaker 1

About 10,000 miles on it . So do the math . So 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 . So seven years . I'm glad he didn't go to 11 . He'd take his shoes off , yeah , exactly . So 11 years . I've had the car and I've put what did I say ? How many miles ? 10,000 . 10 the car and I've put what'd I say ? How many miles ? 10,000 miles . So do the math . I mean , I don't put 5,000 miles a year on the car . Well , and that's generally speaking the criteria , if you put less than $5,000 , 5,000 miles on the car a year , then you can get that special discount , if you will , for car insurance . And what I'd do is I would go see Michael Woody with the Auto Appraisal Network and give me a real , honest-to-god value on the car , and they put it in writing and you send it off to your car insurance company and there you have it . She's here , she's here , she's here , all rise , all rise , all rise , ladies and gentlemen . Divya Sangam .

Speaker 3

She's muted , but let me get her to unmute , unmute . There she is .

Speaker 1

Okay , and she is with a company that is called Lending Tree LLC , and or there's two things here penguin , calm , there you go , hi Divya hi everyone , how are you ? Well , no , the question is how are you ?

Speaker 2

you're never late you're never late , you okay .

Speaker 4

I'm good . Do we need to send Mike over there ? I would appreciate any and all tech support . My computer decided that right now , right before I go live on air , is when it needs to publish a bunch of updates we are very well aware of that yes , we know , we got it , it's okay

Speaker 1

so that wonderful bunch of information that you supplied us before the interview . I've read it all on the air , so it's great talking to you . We'll see you next time . No , I'm just teasing . I'm just teasing , but great information and , my God , the insurance rates .

Insurance Impacts and Saving Tips

Speaker 1

And all I could think of was and we all kind of knew this going in . But and I know this doesn't have anything to do with automobiles , but it does in a way , because these insurance companies not only insure automobiles , they insure businesses , they insure buildings , you name it . Now we've got all of these hurricanes and natural disasters occurring . Now on top of that , these entire subdivisions of Los Angeles burn up in flames , billions and billions , not even counting the number of lives lost out there . Oh my gosh , can you imagine the claims that they're going to have to fork over some money ? I can't even imagine .

Speaker 4

I mean some of the early estimates for the Los Angeles fire are putting damages at above $20 billion , and this is a conservative early estimate .

Speaker 1

I mean , I cannot imagine . Imagine a place that you Nederland , where Mars lives , over there , near Beaumont , port Arthur and Orange . Imagine your whole community , your entire life you've lived there , you've got your doctor there , you've got the car repair shop , your grocery store , all of the things that support you and your life on this earth gone . Yeah , I cannot imagine . Think of the emotional strain of all of that 100% .

Speaker 4

It's unimaginable . And you know there are people saying , oh , it's just a bunch of rich LA residents , but actually that's not true . You know we're having a lot of people who are economically struggling , who've lost their homes . You know fire doesn't care whether you're rich , poor , you know what race you are , it doesn't care , it's just going to burn . And from an insurance perspective , you know the insurance crisis is already pretty bad in california . Right , this is just going to push it over the edge and I really don't know what this means for the rest of the country . Or auto insurance .

Speaker 1

But I do know that it's going to have an impact on rates . Well , and you know , we have been discussing and trying to get a hold of some of the car clubs out there in those affected areas , because you and I , all of us know that hey , that's my baby out there in the garage or I've got multiple Corvette collection out there in the garage gone . I mean just the cars alone , just the cars alone that have been lost in that fire out there in California . And I'm just using that as an example because , listen , we deal with hurricanes here along the Gulf Coast and those poor people in the Carolinas , what they've been through .

Speaker 1

And if you're lucky enough to have insurance and you make a claim on it , first of all , is the claim going to be honored ? Are they going to try to dig their way out of that ? It could be months before you even see a dollar of that . I mean , how are you going to live ? Your whole life is destroyed . And going back to the car issue here , it's part of these insurance companies , but it's only a part .

Speaker 4

And they've got to .

Speaker 1

They've got to . They've got a certain number that they've got to hit to make money , to be able to ensure people in the future yeah , stay in business .

Speaker 4

I will say this , especially if you own a classic car or a collectible car , or even a supercar . Yes , you can get insurance for it . It's going to be more expensive , but there is a certain emotion associated with classic cars . You know that's your baby , baby , like you rightly pointed out . Will the replacement ever really feel the same , especially if it's a car that you've lovingly restored yourself ? You've personally shopped around for parts . Are you still going to get those parts ? So insurance will help , but it's not going to replace those memories associated with those vehicles , especially if it's something you really love and care about . I don't know about .

Speaker 1

Toyota .

Speaker 4

It's sad , but it's not the same as losing that Volkswagen bug that you lovingly restored from scratch and you got all the parts and you traded , you went on Facebook , you did all kinds of stuff . It's not going to be the same .

Speaker 1

Well , it's not . As a matter of fact , I read a story just this week about a guy that went to great lengths to find the exact car that his dad bought brand new . Now the guy's my age now that bought brand new . He tracked it down . It took him years to do . He finally tracked it down . It was horrible shape . He completely restored it just like it was when his dad owned the car and that's the car that he grew up in .

Speaker 1

So talk about an emotional attachment from life , I mean at the beginning of his life . He's known this car and he went to great lengths to restore it . Something like that , losing that sort of thing in a fire out there . I think of . And we tried to get a hold of him . We've still got a phone call into him . It's Jay Leno , who has a fantastic car collection . I can't tell you how many millions and millions and millions of dollars of cars that he has collected over the years . And thank goodness it's still safe . He's not in one of those fire zones and from what I have seen on the outside it's like a fortress and I would imagine that it would survive a fire .

Speaker 1

But to think of all of that , but to get back to the rate thing , all I can think of is the rates are going to go beyond regular people's ability to afford them . Afford the rates . And if you've got a car payment , you are actually under contract to have that car insured by your bank because they want to protect their interest on that car . How do you handle all of that ? What do you do ? Who do you talk to ?

Speaker 4

So let me put the rate increase into perspective . Yes , it's reaching a record high , but the rate increases are decreasing . So last year they went up by 16 plus percent . This year they're going up by 7.5 percent . I mean , I don't know if you want to consider it good news , but it is a little bit of good news in a sea of bad news . However , you're right . You know insurance is going to continue to stretch budgets and if you're in the market for a new car , please do your research before buying that car . You know , if you want to buy a Tesla , for example , and you are someone who's going to struggle to afford the car payment on that Tesla , then you really don't want to buy it because that insurance for Tesla is going to be very , very high 23% higher than a non-electric car .

Speaker 4

So do your research . If you're stuck with a new car and your insurance premiums have gone up , shop around . I cannot emphasize this enough . Within each state , between the seven to eight largest insurance providers , you're going to see as much as 130 , 140% price variation , and that's small . In some states it's as high as 181% . So shopping around is always going to be the best way you can save money . But if you're not able to get something from that , then look at . You know other options to save . Maybe raise your deductible a little bit or , you know , get rid of optional coverages . The last thing you want to do is say , ah , insurance isn't worth it , I'm just going to not have insurance . That's extremely risky . And then if you want to sign up for insurance again in 2026 , you're going to pay a lot more .

Speaker 4

That's number one . Number two drive safe . I cannot emphasize this . It's only not only is it good for your life , it's also good for your balances , your check balances , because if you get a ticket for speeding , you get into a DUI or you have an at-fault accident , your rates are going to go up by an average of 52% and it's going to stay on your record for several years . So you're going to be paying significantly higher because you didn't drive safe .

Speaker 4

Now , if you are someone paying higher because you got one of these , you got a ticket , you got into an accident then go to AAA and sign up for a defensive driver course . That's the best 25 bucks you'll ever spend . You sign up for the course , you complete it and then you call up your insurance company and say , hey , I did this course . They're going to give you a discount for showing that you are taking steps to be a safe driver . They're also going to give you a discount if you say I'm not driving more than 2,000 miles a year and I know this is hard to imagine for someone living in Texas where you have to drive hundreds and hundreds of miles every week .

Speaker 4

But there are people who live in big cities who may not necessarily be driving . They'll be taking public transit or you have a company car . So your personal car you're not using as much and your company car is insured by your company . So in that case , just let the insurance company know I want a low mileage discount . You're going to get some money back for it . You are an active service member . You are on deployment . Let USAA know they're going to give you a discount for the time that you're not in the country . So there are definitely discounts that people can explore to save money on their auto insurance . But at the end of the day , if you're in the market for a new car , please do your homework before buying that car . Find out how much it's going to cost to insure and add that into your overall budget calculations .

Speaker 2

Yeah , well , here's what I've discovered Every time we do a segment , everybody else follows along and tries to do the same thing . So we're going to get ahead of them . You ready , Michael ? Yes , Hold on . Wait a second . Because of the commercial thing , we kind of boogered this up here . Give me just a moment .

Speaker 1

What did we do ? We boogered it up , boogered it up .

Speaker 3

Boogered it up . I hate it whenever you booger it up .

Speaker 2

Yeah , well , dead gummit .

Speaker 1

Well , at any rate , just continue on with the segment , okay , we got it , here we go , thank you .

Speaker 2

So who is responsible for snowboarding ? We'll see Miles of roadway .

Speaker 1

What in the Hold on ?

Speaker 2

Let me fix this . Okay , go ahead . When weather predictions show , let's just move on . When do salt spreaders start working ? Salt spreaders are the first line of defense . Many salt spreaders are pre-positioned before the storm starts . They spread a mix of rock salt and calcium chloride when a trace amount of snow is detected or other snow precipitation has fallen . Is that the right picture ? Yeah , you're good , mike . Uh , they're not in any kind of order for you , okay , does ?

Speaker 2

this snow plow . Does the city pre-treat the streets with salt ? Some cities do to find the treatment effective , as vehicles riding over the salt remove it from the center of the street where it is needed . So be careful . When are snow plows used ? How do they work ? Snow plows may be pre-positioned before the start of a storm and begin operating once nearly two inches of snow has accumulated . Plows are not designed to scrape the street to the blacktop . The plow is set slightly off the ground so that the truck will not trip , and that's a technical term for when the blade hits , something they call it tripping on uneven streets or manhole covers . Remember , a plowed street will not show clear to the blacktop . This is to be expected . A combined approach of salting roads and using plows is most effective in heavy snow . Who is responsible for cleaning the snow and ice from the sidewalk ? You are the tenant , the leasee , the homeowner . Get it done , but don't push it in the street . They say , well , that's kind of hogwash , because that's what we used to do . Push it in the street , why ? Why does temperature matter ? Rock salt begins to lose effectiveness once the temperatures dip below 24 degrees Fahrenheit . But some cities add calcium chloride to increase the salt's effectiveness . Understanding . When temperatures dip , snow and ice removal will take more time . Why do plows push snow to the right ? Two-lane streets especially , plows push the snow to the right to avoid blocking oncoming left lane and a ridge of snow . If plows do not push snow to the right on one-way streets , accumulated snow will make left turns at intersections impossible .

Speaker 2

In what order are streets plowed ? Well , this is interesting . Cities use a sectionary system to determine the order in which city streets are plowed . First , critical streets are plowed . Critical streets include expressways , bus routes , streets with hospitals and schools and other roadways to facilitate the movement of fire trucks and ambulances , police and other emergency vehicles . Streets formerly known as secondary roads are sometimes known for as sectored streets and are plowed according to the designated route . The city's sectoring system achieves routing efficiencies by eliminating redundant travel miles between streets and segments on the given route . When will your garbage be picked up ? Check with your city officials . Go to 311 . They'll be able to tell you , and it's all probably going to be delayed anyway . So be careful out there . Oh , we've got the bike had two bonus shots .

Speaker 2

We didn't do the bonus shots , but that's okay .

Speaker 3

Redneck snowplow .

Speaker 2

Running behind .

Speaker 1

That's all right , because we're not going to do the automotive review here Because Mr Mars is in the penalty box . What ? Because he sends me this archaic thing that he's going to review . I didn't get blamed for it he says I'm going to review the Arcadia Denali . I'm thinking . I've never heard of an Arcadia Denali . He didn't put GMC on it and he spelled it A-R-C-A-D-I-A instead of A-C-A-D-I-A .

Speaker 2

Well , that's how you spell Arcadia .

Speaker 1

Yeah , but the car is not an Arcadia , it's an Acadia , so he's in the penalty box .

Speaker 3
