2023 Car Talk Show Highlights
Speaker 1Welcome to another in wheel time podcast , a 30 minute mini version of the in wheel time car show that airs live every Saturday morning 8 to 11 am Central . Welcome to the in wheel time car talk show coming up . We talked to John Poulos , texas region SCCA , and we're gonna talk to him about the mystery road rally . It's a mystery , I'm not telling you . Jeff has a segment on EVs killing the manual transmission and Keeping them alive . Yep Conrad has the racing calendar and the car clinic and Jason felt Feldman is going to join us .
Speaker 1From the healthman , christa Dodge Jeep Ram dealership talk about automotive fraud and it's an interesting story . At least I think it is , and I think that you will too Later . We got the stories making a lot of news headlines this week . It's all just ahead on this in wheel time car talk show for veterans day 2023 . Howdy , along with Mike out of this world , mars King Conrad along . We always need more . Jeff Seekin . I'm Don Armstrong , glad you could join us for the last hour of our show on veterans day and Hope all the veterans are enjoying their day .
Speaker 3They need to have a day . Thank you for your sacrifice .
Speaker 1Yeah , my dad was a veteran . I think all of our dads were veterans .
Speaker 4Yeah , well , along with other relatives , was your dad .
Speaker 1World . War two , yes , world War two career in war . It would be the Fort McClellan Alabama connection where he met my mom and he met her at a dance .
Speaker 5Oh , oh , that's really interesting . I figured you were gonna say the Civil War , but oh , you know what he's alive down there ?
Speaker 1I just got turned down , I've got , I've got this little console over here that adjusts the audio .
Speaker 4But look at the nice little thing .
Speaker 1Flap those guns there .
Speaker 3Mr Mars , my dad served in the Navy in World War two and on the USS Audreno in the ships no longer in Service and he was part of the crew that towed towed the Pennsylvania back from Pearl to San Francisco dry dock to get it rebuilt .
Speaker 3To go back into service and he tells you know , I remember him telling a few stories of his service and one of them was in on their destroyer patrol . The partner destroyer rammed a U-boat had . They captured everybody that came off of the U-boat . And Back in the late 80s my dad went to Germany and met the U-boat captain . The guy had him over for dinner . I Thought that was the oddest story .
Speaker 4I don't give him a bill for the repair , anything .
Speaker 3No , but it was odd that they they not that they kept in contact , but my dad had had information to contact him . Oh yeah , come on over for dinner . You were trying to kill me 40 years ago . Now I'm gonna have you over for dinner . Taste test this before .
Speaker 1War is a weird thing . Yeah , yes , it is alright . So that's our little salute to Veterans Day 2023 . Now we're gonna salute the Texas region SCCA guy . His name is John Poulos . John , good morning to you , good morning , can you hear me ? Yes , we can now , and it's good to have you with us this morning . I'm sorry . What'd you say , mr Mars ?
Speaker 3We just lost him , we just lost it there , we can hear him , we just can't know .
Speaker 1Now we can't hear it . We're back to the big shot . All right , so we're going to about now .
Speaker 5I suddenly got me .
Speaker 1Yes , well , we , you're kind of going in and out there , well , kind of mr Mars is going to Yep , we hear you now , we see you now . Now is the time , john .
Speaker 6Okay , well , that's .
Speaker 5Good , good combination , let me know if you don't .
Speaker 6Thanks for making I don't know , I don't have to do hand signals . Just very quickly , before I get into the main topic . I am in downtown Teral , texas , at the moment , where they're celebrating for this holiday a British bash . This is , for those who might know , in World War II one of two or three places where Airfields had where they trained RAF pilots , and so there's a big connection here with them .
Speaker 1Mr Mars , you're going to have to reconnect with him because that's going to drive everybody nuts .
Speaker 5Listening to the yeah , I can just get him on a phone Okay that'll work .
Speaker 1John's been a member of the Sports Card Club of America for the past 12 years . He leads the Road Rally Program for the Texas Region , scca , which covers DFW in North Texas . He's also an officer in the local Metroplex Mini Club . My question to his him going to be do you allow us Southerners to come up to the North to participate in your mystery ?
Speaker 3rally ? I would assume so .
Speaker 1Do you have to be an SCCA member ?
Speaker 3Good question . I don't know .
Speaker 1Well , I'm asking the question .
Speaker 3I would think you could go up with a good recommendation from Richard , but as good as that would be , yeah , no .
Speaker 1That and $100 . Yeah , whatever that is . But anyway , I have lots of questions about this mystery rally .
Speaker 5So I'm trying to get him to just dial in on the phone . I'm just taking him back up just so we'll have the audio and we can talk to him , because the connection's not that good .
Speaker 1Okay , well , please fix that , will you ? In the meantime and in between , time , hopefully he heard me . Okay , in the meantime and in between time , I thought this is an interesting story . Ram Trucks has created a pickup truck that can tow and haul without range anxiety an electric pickup truck . The 2025 1500 Ram Charger is an electric vehicle with an onboard gasoline generator to charge the battery . I don't think that's anything out of the ordinary is it ?
Speaker 3That was the Chevy . The Chevy Volt was like that .
Speaker 1Ram CEO Tim Kaniska said the pickup , which can go 690 miles at a time , serves as a bridge to electrification for those whose concerns about range and charging infrastructure would normally keep them away from the fully electric Ram 1500 Rev or REV , which will have a standard battery pack and a targeted 350 mile range to compete with the lightning on Ford's side , and an optional 229 kilowatt per hour battery pack with up to 500 miles of range . The Ram Charger has 145 miles of all electric range .
Speaker 3Good use of name recognition . The charger . Ram Charger yeah .
Speaker 1Didn't they make a Ram Charger ? They ?
Speaker 5did . It's kind of a Tahoe type vehicle , suv .
Speaker 1The updated gasoline powered Ram 1500 coming to market next year with new engine options from Stellantis Hurricane Line . It will offer standard and high output three liter hurricane twin turbocharged engines along with the 3.6 liter Pentastar V6 E-torque . The standard hurricane is rated at 420 horsepower , which is more than the Hemi , and 469 pound feet of torque , while the high output engine is rated at 540 horsepower and 521 pound feet of torque . That's stout . That's stout , yeah . The fresh in 1500 builds on the brand's reputation for swanky interiors , with the introduction of the tungsten trim level also seen in the Rev and the Ram Charger .
Speaker 3So tungsten is higher than platinum .
Speaker 1Apparently . Yeah , you would know that .
Speaker 3Right , yeah , I'm just assuming that's the reasoning for it . But the yeah cool . You know and you gotta think we were just bragging about the truck you just test drove how cool that interior is and they're going to elevate that again . You know they recognize what sells trucks for them , which is interior . You know it's not just about , but it is about the engine as well . But it's not just about the engine , it's about the passenger compartment that a lot of people make that buying decision . Because when I'm sitting in it , what do I like ? You know , I like how it feels when I use my foot on the gas and the brake , but you know how does it feel when I'm sitting in it , looking around in it and Ram has done a great job with it through the years when you're trying to impress the future mother-in-law .
Speaker 1There's that Okay . Um AM radio . Do you listen to AM radio ? Yes , I listen to AM radio . Yeah , I listen to AM radio . Yeah , I listen to political talk radio , so well , I listen to Michael Berry Yep , which is political talk , and let me tell you something I I laughing this . He gets off on these tangents and I have to laugh , I have to laugh . He he's got t-shirts that are available about Sheila Jackson . Oh boy , great stuff , great stuff .
Speaker 3But and he's a . I don't think we can get him on the show . He's not only , he's a car guy .
Speaker 4No , he is a car guy .
Speaker 3He had when he had the redneck country club . He had a Bert Reynolds looking um Transam there , but he also had a general Lee there as well . Um , so he was . He was quite a car guy .
Speaker 1How don't I work on that ?
Speaker 3I'll work on that ?
Speaker 1uh , not next weekend or the week after .
Speaker 3I don't know what happened to either one of those cars and that might not be a story he'd want to talk about , because the redneck country club ended up , you know , closing but , um , because of COVID . But you know he was quite the car guy because he talked quite a bit about both of those cars . Well , I'm a big fan , I'm a huge fan , Michael Berry . He makes you laugh , makes you smile , but he makes you think that's right , it's . It's not just his point of view , but he just makes you think about who people are and what they do . So that's , you know , kind of scary All right .
Speaker 1Well , uh , we have established contact back with John Pulo , mystery contact , the mystery contract with the mystery rally coming up Texas region . See you out . While you were gone I was a touting all of your credentials on the air with us , john . So we're not going to be able to see John , but we're going to be able to hear John . I hope , john , let me hear you .
Speaker 6Yeah , can you hear me now ?
Speaker 1I can hear you now Okay .
Speaker 6Excellent .
Speaker 1So we're going to go with that .
Speaker 6I'll answer your question about yes , you're not only uh , can you come up the road to to join the rally , but we invite you to folks from Houston to come up . We do have a every once in a while we have folks who drive up from Houston , san Antonio , austin , uh , to participate in our rallies . Uh , so we're , we're glad to uh . You know there's always a little bit of help , the rivalry um in the even in rally do I have to be ?
Speaker 1a member of the SCCA .
Speaker 6You do not , you become , if you're not a a ready a member , you , you , you become a weak , weak end member , and and that entitles you . So no , you don't have to be a full-time member to enter we , we make you a a weak end member . There's a slight change in the or difference in the in the entry fee , but everybody's welcome . No rally experience required and the pretty much any street legal vehicle is is allowed .
Speaker 1Do I get a name badge ? Does it have SCCA on it ?
Speaker 6Uh well , we can . We can , we'll have some things to hand out .
Speaker 5They got a . They got a permanent marker .
Speaker 3They'll write on your forehead for you and they can write it in reverse . You can see it in the mirror . Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha ha ha ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha , ha ha Look as you can tell .
Speaker 1John , we're real serious on this show and uh so well , I can relate to that , okay , well that's good . I'm glad to hear that . So my question to you is , please , if you will explain to all of us what is a mystery road rally ?
Speaker 6Well , I'll , I'll back up a little and tell you what a road rally . Uh , I know that you you encounter all kind of rallies with all kind of all kind of flavors and types .
Speaker 1Um , and I'll even bring the pom-poms if that's what it takes .
Speaker 6Oh , okay , I'm going to add that to the program . Then I'll declare that we have Houston entertainment , that's it .
Mystery Road Rally Concept Explained
Speaker 6So the rally , the road rally , the type that we're doing , we do various kinds of rallies . We do , uh , some people know them . You know TSD , where you're trying to arrive at checkpoints just the prescribed time , uh , driving at average speeds , and that .
Speaker 6But this , this is what we call a GTA , or some people call a gimmick rally , where you're scoring on the basis of answering questions or solving puzzles , that sort of thing , which might be in this , in this case , this , who done it ? One , uh , the questions are all based on information that you would find on signs , uh , and the questions are sometimes , uh , fairly obvious and sometimes it's play on words , uh , you know that sort of thing , some creative things , so they're not always obvious and you have to be able to spot them . Um , and you know , for example , a question might be , uh , screen named after John Wayne , and you'll see , come along , you'll see Duke Street , or , uh , sad Mountain question mark , and you'll come along to a town called Blue Ridge . You'll , you know , hopefully be able to recognize and answer the question . Um , or even more creatively , if you , we did one where , uh , the question or the statement was uh , I'm obsessed . Frazzled parents will trade blank . And as you drove along , you suddenly said well , there it is the sign that said watch for children . Um , so there's all kinds of ways of answering . They were finding these questions .
Speaker 6In this case , the mystery is , in addition to answering those questions , uh , some of the questions reveal clues . Uh about . This is kind of pattern after the game of clue , if you remember that yes , I do . Eventually , everybody has done that . So some of the questions will reveal a clue about , uh , which person ? Uh , about a person , about a or a location or a weapon , and you've got a list of those choices and you're trying to eliminate as many as possible . So Colonel Luster did it with a candlestick in the library , no , in the corner .
Speaker 5You're in a car , so John John does this . Are you limited to ?
Speaker 1the number of people that you've got in the car helping .
Speaker 6Uh , in this , in this rally , no , these road rallies , you know all , we're all about safety and for obvious reasons , you have instructions and stuff . We require two people in the car driver and a navigator .
Speaker 1See , I'm thinking about bringing the 12 year old , the whole backseat at 12 year olds and hand them the clues . Yeah , and , and whoever has the most wins on each clue .
Speaker 4It's an ice cream or something . This reminds me of an escape room on wheels . Have you ever been in an escape room ? You got to find the clues in order to get out of the room . So that's what this is . That's up to me .
Speaker 1Yeah , so is it a time to it ?
Speaker 6It's a . It's not times like a time speed distance one . It's timed in the sense that you have a maximum amount of time to complete the rally , which usually allows a comfortable margin . So if you , if you take , let's say , this was four hours , if we had allowed the maximum , once you go past four hours , just start to incur some penalty points . But it's not , it's not a speed event and unless you're going off course frequently , you're probably not going to run out of time . So it's not that kind of time constraint . But yes to your answer , this is you know , road rally is something that the family can participate in , while we do have national level rallies where you can only have two people and they're much more challenging in terms of the navigation and whatnot . These regional rallies allow for passengers in the back who can participate , help or just watch , or watch the driver and the navigator bicker over which way to turn .
Speaker 1Bicker , so you can bring your wife , yeah .
Speaker 3And the mother-in-law in the backseat and the mother-in-law in the backseat .
Speaker 6Well , actually there are family situations that we had . One case this is we in the SCCA do , as you may know . We had road racing , time trials , autocross road rallies , some places they do hill climbs and whatnot , and this is the only one that's open much more widely to anybody . You don't need a helmet and that sort of gear and you can . You know it can be a family event , which one extreme case we had once where a couple competed and they had their six-month-old baby and they requested an extra time allowance because they had to stop and breastfeed the baby , something that doesn't happen too much in road racing or autocross .
Speaker 5I imagine Not too much .
Speaker 6But yeah , in fact we had a family from Houston that came up a couple years ago and they brought their two or three kids and they participated in several rallies and they won the season .
Speaker 1So yeah , when is this event , John ?
Speaker 6It's the 2nd of December , Saturday .
Speaker 1Well , it's coming up pretty quick and how do we get more information ? Where do we show up ? How do we pay an entry fee ? Obviously , we got to drive to Dallas .
Speaker 6So there's . So our Texas region couple places Texas region . Texas sdcaorg has the event . If you Google you'll probably find it , but Motorsport Reg , if you look for road rally in the Dallas-Fort Worth area , it'll show up and that's where the site is for all the details plus registration and whatnot .
Speaker 1And how much is the entry fee for us non-conformists ?
Speaker 6For you non-conformists , it's $40 per vehicle , Not per person .
Speaker 1Nice .
Speaker 6Well , that'd be a fun little trip .
Speaker 5Cheap entertainment for the day .
Speaker 6Yeah Well , not only that , but this one is also a charity rally . Every year we've been doing , for the past several years , a book run and this particular event we're combining . We ask entrance to donate a couple of children's books which go to Scottish Right for Children , which is one of the nation's leading pediatric orthopedic hospitals and medical systems , and so we gather a whole bunch of books and we take them over to Scottish Right and we have a good cause .
Speaker 1Yeah , no doubt . Well , john , it's great to talk to you . Thanks so much . I love the mystery rally and I love the fact that it's at time of the year that we gather up the family and get together and do those sort of things , and this is a car related family event , that you get on the road and you all got a job to do and we're into taking those trips . Yeah absolutely Well , John , it's great to talk to you . Texassccaorg .
Speaker 3I posted a link on our social media for your road rally scavenger hunt .
Speaker 6Excellent . Yeah , come on out and rally . There are rallies on the plate too . Check them out . But join us .
Speaker 1Well , we certainly will Thank you , john . Great to talk to you . Appreciate your time . All right , john Poulos , Texas Region . Scca Time now here on the In-Wheel Time Car Talk Show for the race card . Right , and we got a big , big finale out in Pomona , california .
Speaker 3And that's about it for racing , okay .
Speaker 5Finale .
Speaker 3Well , thank you , congress . And last , yeah , and last , I saw Erica was qualified fifth . Well , I don't know , yeah , that's all third , but whatever . And she was 140 points up on the next person in line . So I think if she makes it to the semis she wins the championship .
Speaker 5If she don't get disqualified or some BS thing .
Speaker 4Yeah , that seems to be happening more frequently now that season's ending , even not only in drag racing but in other races F1 , yeah . Yeah , in NASCAR too , is it ?
Speaker 3F1 still racing . No , yeah , f1 still has their finale , but the championship's already been .
Speaker 1So where is the next race ?
Speaker 3Abu .
Speaker 4Yeah , they're going to crybaby track , I believe , because there are a bunch of blankety , blank and crybabies .
Speaker 3Oh , abu , abu , Dhabi . Oh no , the next one is Vegas next weekend . Oh , that's right , first time in Vegas and then Abu Dhabi the weekend , the Thanksgiving weekend .
Speaker 1You imagine okay , everybody pack up . We're going to go halfway around the world to our next race . Going to take us two days to get there .
Speaker 3Well , they came to the east . You know , they started with Kota , they went to Mexico City , Brazil , and now they're coming back up to India , Las Vegas , and then they're going to load up in all those planes and go to Abu Dhabi .
Speaker 4Yeah , they hit you with your purse .
Speaker 1All right , jeffrey's got a feature on how EVs are killing and also saving the manual transmission .
Speaker 4Yeah , how about that , and this is the way it's working Now . It's clear that electric vehicles may be here to stay , as they offer some advantages over most gas powered vehicles , including low emissions , smooth ride and instant acceleration and performance . However , despite their many benefits , for some , evs just cannot replace the feel of the real mechanical machine powered by what Gasoline . The automotive industry is moving away from manual transmission since automatic transmissions and EVs offer superior comfort and practicality , making them the preferred choice for most car owners . In fact , most new car are only equipped with automatic gearboxes , which makes sense if that's the way you want to go . The reasons and some of them are the numerous reasons for this decline One EV cars feature automatic transmissions have a lot to say when it comes to reliability and performance , making them more attractive to buyers looking for a comfortable and convenient ride .
Speaker 4Since manual transmissions are more complex and expensive to build and maintain , manufacturers are relatively less profit makers . The manual cars compared to automatics , they're just not making the money . Manual transmissions do not offer much compatibility with recent features such as hybrid systems , adaptive cruise control and autonomous driving . Since the powertrain in an EV is more straightforward , being single gear direct drive , manual transmissions have no place in the electric vehicle segment . Efficiency is another critical reason why manual transmissions are becoming less popular compared to automatic transmission systems . By shifting gears at the most efficient times , modern automatic transmissions are tuned to maximize fuel economy . So that's one of the major reasons Today's automotive culture , particularly among young people . They place a premium on handling , performance and aesthetics .
Speaker 4Evs are also keeping the manual transmission alive by creating contrast and demand for it among enthusiasts who want to have more fun and engaging driving experiences . And , lastly , is believe manual transmissions will potentially become a rare and exclusive feature that will differentiate gasoline-powered sports cars from EVs and attract buyers who want to have more authentic and emotional relationships with their vehicle and you know about emotional relationships , mike , with your vehicle . There you go . Now . I did see a shifter . I'm showing shifter pictures . Had Braille on the top of the shifter . Swear to God , saw it .
Speaker 1Well , so you'd know what gear you're in while you're driving .
Speaker 3I guess With the old driving blind .
Speaker 4I think there's a song about that . Yeah , so there it is . They're trying to get rid of them , but yet they're being more popular , and if you go to a restaurant that has valet parking , you will sometimes see a sign that says we don't have manual transmissions .
Speaker 1No , I've got a manual transmission . I'm gonna park it myself in the spot that you have . I'll pay you the money , but leave it up to me . Don't touch it in my car . Don't touch it in my car .
Speaker 3Well , but yeah , manual transmissions used to be a significant part of the car culture and even in selling new cars back in the 60s , it wasn't uncommon to see some of the big cars with a manual transmission in the 60s . Well , that's all gone .
Speaker 4Everybody's gone for the convenience of auto products Chrysler 300s and all that , the old school , the monster cars . Pontiac , bonneville , catalinas and stuff and that should be part of a driver's education course for these young youngsters . Coming up for Kylie , she should know how to do drive with a stick .
Speaker 5Well , I had to teach . No , they don't do that anymore .
Speaker 1They don't , but they should . I taught Katie how to drive a manual transmission , obviously , it's worked out pretty good , I learned how I taught all of mine , you know , for the same reason .
Speaker 5Now the grandkids , they don't even want to learn how . No , they probably won't ever see one .
Speaker 3Yeah , both were shell , and Austin can drive sticks .
Speaker 4I learned how to drive on my brother-in-law's Ricky Rikapri .
Speaker 1It was by dads Biscayne with three speed on the column .
Speaker 3Eh eh eh eh eh eh , it was my company car zero six Corvette in the . Dillard's Park and lot in Willowbrook Mall . Hey the In Wheel .
