Ladies and gentlemen , it's the In Wheel Time Car Talk Show . Today we're at the Spring Car Social at Gulf Coast , auto Shield Coming up . We've got another guest from today's cruise in . Later Jeff has this week's Motor Minute .
Speaker 2We already did that .
Speaker 1Well , I've got it here . Did I put it down twice ? That's all right . Well , you can do it again and I'll have this week's Stories Making Automotive News headlines this week Just ahead here on the In Real Time Car Talk Show .
Speaker 2No , you know what the problem is . You didn't flip the page .
Speaker 1I didn't flip the dang page . Flip the page . Turn the page , Bob .
Speaker 2Seger , what a moron . Turn the page , mr Seger .
Speaker 1Jeez , we got the review of the Dark Horse , the Ford Mustang Dark Horse , and Mr Mars is going to have the events calendar . So we've got lots to do . We've just got to turn the page and get going with it .
Speaker 2We're going to sneak in some snacks too while we're at it .
Speaker 1Howdy , along with Mike , out of this world Mars . We always need more Jeff Zekin with his mouth full of very delicious breakfast taco , it looks like Trying to wolf down a taco .
Speaker 1Yeah , our chief engineer , it director and all-around nut job , david Ainsley . I'm Don Armstrong . Glad you could join us today . It's always a pleasure to have you with us . How'd you hold out with the weather ? Hope your car didn't get destroyed or hurt or anything like that . There were some cars that I saw on the news . Ooh , they did not look good at all . No , especially the big trees coming out of them .
Speaker 1Brick wall came down on one . Not look good at all , no , especially the big trees coming out of them . Brick wall came down on one . Yeah it's . You know it was ugly out there . So , anyway , I got the 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse that we're going to talk about , so it's going to be really good , all right . Well , I see that Mr Mars has rounded up a guest .
Speaker 2Whether they like it or not . Yeah .
Speaker 4So go ahead , mr morris .
Speaker 3So d has got this bright red porsche setting right out here .
Speaker 2Guards red , guards red . Yes , sir , excuse me , absolutely , we had a picture of it right out there yeah , yeah , it's that bright red one that they're on the screen .
Speaker 3So anyway , thought we'd kind of figure out uh , tell us about the Porsche , your Porsche and Porsche in general , I guess .
Speaker 4So this is a 2019 GTS Carrera 4 . So it is an all-wheel drive vehicle with PDK and the twin turbo , 3 liter and center-lock wheels and some of the other options . You know it's got the chrono package on it . I do have a sunroof on it , a fully retractable sunroof , which is really nice . I've had John do the front end and the hood and one of the accents . It's got all carbon trim on the mirrors and on all the details on the inside , which is a really , really nice look for the car , particularly up against that red . Oh yeah , yeah , it really stands out . I really like it .
Speaker 3So is it a manual ?
Speaker 4or automatic .
Speaker 3No , it's an automatic .
Speaker 4Seven-speed PDK . Pdk . Yeah , okay , I can't speak it in German , but it is . Pdk is in German .
Speaker 3Yeah , that's what I was going to say .
Speaker 4It's about a foot long when you speak it in German . Okay , this is my third Porsche and I had a huge gap between number one and number two and number three . It's called wedding bells . So I had an 85 and a half 944 . And then , believe it or not , on our wedding day I traded that for a 1990 Turbo 944 . On your wedding day a wedding present .
Speaker 3On your wedding day A wedding present .
Speaker 4On my wedding day and that's what we drove away from the church in to go on our honeymoon .
Speaker 3Well , that's the way to do it .
Speaker 4It didn't live too long at the house . And it got sold .
Speaker 3Oh well . And you know , life went on . Yep , life happens .
Speaker 4Well , when the new Porsche dealership here in sugarland opened , uh , I went up there because I live in sugarland , I'd watched the dealership being built and I went up on their pre-owned showroom floor and I saw that car and I went home to my wife and I said I found it , I've got to have that car . And so I took her up and showed it to her and she said just get it , get it over with , just get it . And I said done , and so it's , it's found a new home . Very good , yeah , I really really like it .
Speaker 3yeah , I really like it I like the way it looks , particularly that red color setting out there between the black and that other yeah , it's interesting that when you go to the dealerships you don't see too many guards red cars anymore .
Speaker 4There there are a lot of the silvers and blacks , you're right , and the dark blues , but for some reason I think what's been nicknamed as Arrest Me Red .
Speaker 1Yes , Give me a ticket . Red has kind of fallen by the side . There's a nice red one back there .
Speaker 4Oh yeah , that's a real classic . That thing is super . You ever driven one of those ? I have never driven an air-cooled 911 . No , sir , that would be interesting . Yeah , I would really like to . So , is this a daily driver for you ? It can be . Actually , I have a minivan that John wrapped for me oh yeah . He's not admitting it , and so that's more of my daily driver . But this gets driven , believe me . I found some nice back roads here in Fort Bend and Brazoria County That'll work .
Speaker 2I've put it in sport mode a couple times there you go , need to head out to the Brookshire area and all that . Fulshire and Brookshire , all that good driving stuff .
Speaker 4I'd like to get a bunch of guys from the club to go up to Twisted Sisters and do Twisted Sisters again .
Speaker 3But you have been there .
Speaker 4I've been up there , Not in that car but I've been on Twisted Sisters on a bicycle .
Speaker 3On a bicycle , yeah .
Speaker 4I'm a cyclist from a long time ago .
Speaker 3Very cool , yeah , motorcycles . I've heard people cool , yeah , motorcycles . I've heard people going up there with motorcycles , but I haven't heard of the bicycle yet .
Speaker 4If you find a good downhill run , you know like the best I've done up there . So a little over 50 miles an hour coming down .
Speaker 1My bicycle experience is one with a motor on it .
Speaker 4Yeah , yeah , nothing wrong with that . Don't look at me that way .
Speaker 3Morris , no , I'm thinking , that's me .
Speaker 2He still has it in his garage .
Speaker 1It was a motor bike that I built Back in the 60's . You built your own .
Speaker 4Yeah , lawnmower motor .
Speaker 1Uh huh , edger , motor actually .
Speaker 4So it was two cycle .
Speaker 1No , no , no , it was a four cycle Briggs and Stratton . Huh , yeah , you know , recoil , pull start thing on it . Yep , yeah , yeah , I built my own and it was . I think it was a 20-inch bike , small bike .
Speaker 2And I had the sissy bar on it , the banana seat , some ape hangers on it , so I'm mistaken . What was it ? What was it that you showed me a while ago that it wasn't that bike ? You built something else , or was it that ?
Speaker 1no , it was that was that that was it . It's in pieces but it's all there . I took it apart with the intent of getting the frame fixed , because it's been busted a couple of times because of the weight of my fat butt and so it didn't at the time . Of course , you know , I was in middle school when I built the thing and it could use a little help on the frame aspect of it , but it works .
Speaker 4Did you weld your own frame ?
Speaker 1I did not .
Speaker 4You did not .
Speaker 1No , I did not . I bolted on the motor mount , bolted it on with U-bolts to the frame and had a centrifugal clutch and a V-belt that went back to the back wheel and it worked just fine . Get it up to 30 , 35 miles an hour .
Speaker 4Yeah , and on something like that , 35 miles an hour feels like you're flying .
Speaker 1Yeah , it does .
Speaker 2It does Especially that age of a kid too .
Speaker 1Absolutely yeah , and I was . I was flying , I rode that thing everywhere Pretty well bulletproof what . At that age you're pretty well bulletproof . You think absolutely no helmet , nothing , right moron . But you know that's the way it was back in the day . Well , thank you very much for being with us , sir thank you , it's uh it's a pleasure . Where are the rest of the boys from your club and is it ?
Speaker 4filling up . They're just , they're not wandering around sharing car stories yeah , I see . Well , we're gonna have to grab another one here before too long , oh yeah , there's a gentleman out there who's got a delivery car and he's got some great stories , I'm sure . A delivery car .
Speaker 1Yeah .
Speaker 4He went to Germany and got his car and he delivered it .
Speaker 1To himself yeah .
Speaker 4And then put it on a boat and sailed it home .
Speaker 1All right , Yep , well , thank you very much .
Speaker 4All right , we appreciate you stopping by . Thanks , thanks , guys . Thank you you bet Bye .
Speaker 1We have the Sold Cars Roundup Now . I know to some people it might not be all that exciting , but to me it is because we have such a good time doing it .
Speaker 2Yeah .
Speaker 1So if you can play along at home , mr A on , and you can join in the fun Okay , you know how the game is played I do you give me $20 , and I can start .
Speaker 1Yeah , exactly . So we're going to do Hemmingscom Sold Cars Roundup . That's the sold cars of the past week .
Classic Car Price Guessing Game
Speaker 1Right now we have the 1978 Chevrolet Corvette . Now , this was the first year of the fastback glass . I know because I had a 77 . Now this is a two-tone paint job . It's not the Indy pace car version . It's got a silver top but a gray bottom . Okay , it looks like it's got stock wheels on it . It does have louvers covering the rear glass . I think I would take those off , but you know it's a sign of the times back then .
Speaker 2Now what do you ?
Speaker 1think a 1978 Chevy Corvette would go for . I don't know the mileage none of that stuff I'm thinking 17 .
Speaker 3I'm thinking 14 .
Speaker 1Ding ding , ding ding ding 14 , 175 .
Speaker 1What would you think I was going to say ? 18 . 18 , yeah , 14 , 175 . So don't ever say that you can't get into a Corvette . Let's go to a 1972 Chevrolet Blazer , a real two-door Blazer from 1972 . There was basically a shortened truck that they put that capper on to enclose the passenger compartment . It had the front . It could have had a front bench , but most of them that I'm familiar with had front buckets and a bench in the second row , no third row . What do you think something like that would sell for today ? A 1972 Chevrolet Blazer ? It is nothing spectacular . It looks like it's been a restomod kind of thing .
Speaker 3Ten grand , ten grand 43 .
Speaker 1Jeff says 43 . 43 .
Speaker 3Yeah , I was thinking like 38 . How about ?
Speaker 152.5 ? Oh wow 52.5 . Yeah , wow , 52.5 . Yeah , there's that . I'm sorry . I was working at Richardson Chevrolet in 1970 , and we made ready lots of those . That is not worth 52.5 .
Speaker 3Well it is today . It's kind of like the Bronco , the 72 Bronco or Warner 69s .
Speaker 1The build quality back then was for the birds .
Speaker 3It was terrible , I agree , but I think it's the and you shut the door and it's hollow tin and it's just cheap , but by now they've been either restored better than they ever were or they've been restomodded . Put your mind into . They've been either restored better than they ever were , or they've been , restomodded .
Speaker 1All right , put your mind into really the 90s , but early 2000s . This is a 2006 .
Speaker 2Is this a ?
Speaker 1dance-off or something . 2006 . Pontiac GTO . Now let me explain . Pontiac was about to go out of business , but theyhmm , but they wanted to revive the GTO name . So what did they do ? They went to the then sister of General Motors , holden in Australia , and said you have a car that we can put a body on with basically a Corvette motor , body on with a basically a Corvette motor . And then they made this round ugly looking 2006 Pontiac GTO . Now , if you're listening to me and you have a 2006 Pontiac GTO I did not mean to offend , but I'm sorry , it's not all that .
Speaker 1And that was part of the problem because you would think , okay , we'll bring it back to GTO . It didn't look like a GTO , not whatever . How much do you think a 2006 Pontiac GTO would be ? I only drove one of them from the factory and it rode great . Independent rear suspension , had the Corvette motor in it and it actually had a I think it was a six-speed manual transmission . How much do you think that that would go for today ?
Speaker 3Eight grand , I'm going to go 18 , 12 .
Speaker 1$28,350 . But you know what ? I think it must have low miles or something . Either that or the fact that the nostalgia factor that's it .
Speaker 3I think that that probably added some money to it and it's got the corvette motor in it , so it's not like it's just a dog . Dog , it's just correct , not a pretty dog correct .
Speaker 1All right , here's one for you , mars . Yeah , this is , uh , this is back in your mobster days in neederville the 1940 ford deluxe , nice , uh , big , wide whites on it . This thing has been restored and it looks really pretty . What do you think something like that would cost this to me if , if you know you wanted to get into a , wanted to get in the car hobby , right , right , nice cars , a driver , but a nice driver . You could go probably on the Hot Rod Tour of Texas and not have to do too much to get it up to 60 miles an hour . That'd be my guess .
Speaker 1I would assume it's got a flathead V8 in it 1940 , whatever it's got the big long hood on it Kind of pointy nose with the big tall grill Headlights and the fenders .
Speaker 3I would say something around $27,000 . $32,000 . $30,000 .
Speaker 1$44,100 . Yeah , nice car Driver . Must be Wow yeah , nice car .
Speaker 3Driver Must be .
Speaker 1Here's one for Jeff Okay , a 1975 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Convertible in petty blue with a white interior . It's a convertible 75 . It's huge and it weighs like it's huge 11,000 . 11,000 , David .
Speaker 2Or priceless whenever the two 14 .
Speaker 314? .
Speaker 1You'd say 14 ? Mm-hmm . What'd you say 11 . 11 ? Mm-hmm Mars'd you say 11 . 11 ? Mm-hmm Mars , would you like to chime in on that price of that ?
Speaker 275 . I already won , so never mind 1975 Chevy Caprice Classic convertible .
Speaker 3Oh drop top , it's still probably worth about $15,000 .
Speaker 1$15,750 to be exact Wow , Good for you . Now15,750 to be exact Wow , Good for you . Now you want to go on the Hot Rod Tour and have some eyes on you . Take that .
Speaker 3Well , and it'd be a nice driver with top down .
Speaker 1Now this one here . This is for Jeff . Okay , a 1967 Ford Galaxy 500 . Ooh , it too is a convertible . It's black with I don't know , I can't really tell . It looks like a gray interior . It's very pretty . $18 . $18 .
Speaker 2Mars . I think it's more though .
Speaker 3No , I would still say around that same $15 , $16 , $15 , $15 .
Speaker 1$21,000 .
Speaker 3Yeah , I was going to say Probably a good shake .
Speaker 1I still won . There they are Okay , and our last contestant of the morning would be the 1958 . I can't even imagine what this thing would weigh . It probably weighs four tons . Well , I may be exaggerating , but a 1958 Buick Roadmaster Coupe , a 58 Buick Roadmaster Lots of chrome . This is a Mitchell car , mitchell-designed car . Okay , a 58 Buick Roadmaster Mars . What do you think that would go for ? It looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor . Well , I would have 22 , 32 , 38 . $31,500 .
Speaker 3You win the car , Jeffrey .
Speaker 1Oh , perfect , see , I guess that the point that I'd like to make this morning is the fact that you too can get in the hot rod business if you're not in it already . Yeah , or might want to trade for something like that . I just thought that that would be pretty cool .
Speaker 2Or if you've got a C5-01 Corvette and you want to trade , yeah , that would be a good thing to do .
Speaker 1I'm good right now , but thank you for offering yeah . Hey , the In Real Time Car Talk Show is available 24-7 through the iHeartRadio app . Just look for In Real Time Car Talk . The reviewed trim level is the Dark Horse , which basically combines the GT 350 and the 500 elements into this Dark Horse . It is classified as a subcompact . Did you know that the Mustang would be classified as a subcompact ? Did you know that the Mustang would be classified as a subcompact ?
Speaker 2I did not know that
Seventh Generation Mustang Review
Speaker 2.
Speaker 1Seats , four passengers , four , two in the front , two in the back , if you can get back there . Exterior changes this is a completely redesigned seventh generation Mustang . You wouldn't know by looking at it . I don't think it has all new body work , sands , the front pillars and the roof . Those are the only two things that remain . Carryover , wow . Exterior features slight tweaks to the outgoing models . Creases are more pronounced , larger rear haunches give it a wider look in the back . Squinty , three light uh . Headlight pods matches the three light rear lighting as well . Rear spoiler uh , it really does look good . Um , what I liked about it ? The body design gets an a+ as far as I'm concerned . What could use improvement ? Nothing , don't touch it . Looks great . Interior highlights Full digital instrument cluster , now with a 13-inch infotainment screen . All one piece of glass in the front . It really does look good . Our optional Recaro seats are well-suited for car and track days . Handbrake doubles as a drifting tool Wow .
Speaker 2Can you imagine ? That yeah ?
Speaker 1So it's there and it goes up and it goes down . So if you're going to use it for park , just pull it up , park light comes on . But if you put it into a track mode , which is you get that through the apps , what's it called ?
Speaker 1The Ford Sync System 4 is what it's got in it . You can use it as a drifting tool . I thought that was pretty cool . Kudos to Ford on that Flat bottom steering wheel , which has fewer buttons on the steering wheel . This is a racer's delight , adequate for a trip trip for two anywhere . As far as trunk room is concerned , you can put plenty of bags and stuff back there in the back . What I liked about it ? The design overall is just great . Nothing could use improvement on that . It has a 5 liter V8 engine , 500 horsepower , 418 pound feet of torque , 6 speed manual transmission and let me tell you something , that shifter was as smooth as glass . I mean , you could just kind of la , la , la , la , la , la la , but you could hit . It's kind of like a .
Speaker 2Pee Wee Herman thing , la , la , la , la la , but you la la , but you could hit . It's kind of like a Pee .
Speaker 1Wee Herman thing , la , la , la , la la , but you could hit those gears so easily . It was really nice . Now , gas mileage well , 500 horsepower and a gasoline-powered engine 14 miles per gallon , city , 22 on the highway , for a combined of 17 . Now , believe it or not , yours truly got 19.2 miles per gallon over 450.2 miles . What I liked about it ? The power . I don't think anything could use improvement in that area . It is not a boosted engine , it's naturally aspirated . And boy does it sound good , by the way , it's got that— .
Speaker 2Rumble .
Speaker 1Well , yeah , two variations of the rumble . If you want it quiet , great . If you don't want it quiet , you got that too . You can also adjust it . So if you want it to be loud for the neighbors at 3.30 in the morning , there's an adjustment for that . It'll stay loud for about 30 seconds and then it quiets down well , where were we ?
Speaker 2we went out , uh , I followed you somewhere in it and it was kind of rumbly early morning yeah , it was .
Speaker 1Uh , it was pretty cool . Uh , ride and handling . Well , what I liked about it is the track capability right off the showroom floor . This is a factory race car any way you look at it . The Monroney did not have pricing on it . This was a I wouldn't say a pre-production model , but I don't think they'd put the price on it when they made it .
Speaker 3Yeah , that's .
Speaker 1Anyway , a base trim price estimated $60,000 . Price is tested . Well , the options list does include a gas guzzler tax . I don't know how much the gas guzzler tax is , but it's included in that Wow . So you can just imagine Now if you just want to get into a Mustang 4-banger $30,920 . But let's go back to the Dark Horse . Competitors to this vehicle in base size and price . Comparable to the Dark Horse would be the Dodge Challenger . Now I know that it's not in production anymore , but I'll bet you if you looked real hard you could find a dealer that had some . It's $70,000 . The Chevy Camaro ZL1 , that too is out of production $75,000 . Or how about the Nissan Z ? That would be for you , david . The Nismo version of that starts at $66,230 . So that gives you an idea of the Chevrolet . Sorry , the Mustang Dark Horse , that was on the Chevrolet thought , but at any rate it was a fun vehicle and I appreciate Ford and Ken Peabody giving me a chance to drive it .
Speaker 2So you said 70 years , or the seventh generation , yep , so that would be like a Corvette . You're now the C8 in a Corvette Yep , so that would be an M7 ? Think about it , okay , yeah .
Speaker 1That's what my thought is .
Speaker 2That's where I'm going with it .
Speaker 1If you've got the bucks and you want to take it down to Motorsports Ranch and you want to do some track time , that's the car to have .
Speaker 2Bring an extra set of tires . That's what I would suggest .
Speaker 1Hey , it comes with really sticky Pirellis .
Speaker 2I know .
Speaker 1And so it comes with race tires that are street legal on the car . But be ready to open up that wallet because you're going to go to those pretty quick . I would guess I would think so , With the drifting capabilities and all the other stuff .
Speaker 3Well , even if you didn't , they're just going to wear quicker because of their design . Well , that's part of it .
Speaker 1Yeah , it's like NASCAR tires , they last for so many laps and then you come in and change them .
Speaker 3Right , it's just cost of doing business . That's the way it is .
Speaker 1All right . If you'd like to get in touch with us , shoot us an email . The address here is info at inwheeltimecom . We're back .
