Exploring the Car Community: Honoring Veterans, Vehicles, and Charitable Causes

Gather 'round folks, as we rev up another episode of In Wheel Time Car Talk Show. This time around, we're not just talking cars and car culture. We're also honoring Veterans Day, exploring the heartfelt stories of those who've served, and highlighting how our love for cars ties into the spirit of community and camarity. From the Ford Freak car club to the 2000 Seleen S281 vert convertible and that whopping $80,000 Ram 1500, we're driving through an assortment of automotive tales.
As always, our friend Randy Weldon joins us to talk all things Mustang.
As we shift gears, we delve into the heartwarming story of a veteran's special trip, thanks to a generous charitable organization. We're also taking to the skies with Teddy Kirkpatrick of Lone Star Flight Museum, who holds the record for flying more missions than anyone else. In the spirit of giving, we talk about the Gullo Christmas for Kids Foundation and their noble cause of providing Christmas gifts for children. And for our car-loving listeners, we bring you the tale of Waller County Sheriff's Department partnering with the Ford Musang car club for a unique car show experience.
Wrapping up, we cruise down memory lane as we discuss the bond that car clubs create. Sharing the story of how the San Jacinto Corvette Club united Bill and Sharon Seitz in 1977, we celebrate the lifelong friendships formed in our very own automotive community. Mark your calendars for the upcoming Mustang Club of America 60th anniversary event at Barber Motorsports Park in April 2024. We end our journey with a delicious detour through the great Tex-Mex cuisine available at Lupe Tortilla's locations in Houston, Texas, and College Station.
Whether you're a car enthusiast, a veteran, or a lover of heartfelt stories, this episode has something for you. So buckle up and enjoy the ride!

In Wheel Time Car Talk Show
Speaker 1Welcome to another in wheel time podcast , a 30 minute mini version of the in wheel time car show that airs live every Saturday morning 8 to 11 am somewhere From the sugar shock studios in Texas , usa . It's the in wheel time car talk show coming up Ford Freak car Club God and more . Randy Weldon is going to join us . He's gonna talk Mustang stuff , thank you Just some good stuff in . We're gonna talk , talk about Veterans Day to , so we've got all that coming up .
Speaker 3Oh , randy's kind of crying in his suit because he missed that 2000 Celine S281 vert convertible . You know , I don't see , I don't see him crying right now , because I know he said that's one of the cars he'd like to have is a Celine convertible .
Speaker 1Well , he didn't peruse what did it go for ?
Speaker 3that we peruse About 20 grand . Wow , he's got a 20 grand sitting around , yeah exactly pocket .
Speaker 1All right , so also coming up , I got a chance to drive the $80,000 ram 1500 . I'll give you my thoughts on it . Conrad has the cruising calendar and this week in auto history and later We'll bring you stories making automotive news headlines Howdy , it's all just a head on the in wheel time car talk show . Joining us today , mike , out of this world , mars King , conrad , along , we always need more . Jeff Zekin , I'm Don Armstrong , so glad that you could join us on this Veterans Day , and a pleasant Veterans Day to all of the veterans out there . Thanks for serving our country and we do appreciate it . I'm sorry that the Veterans Day parade got canceled , lest we never forget . Yeah , and so my dad was a veteran .
Speaker 5I was not , you Did you , sir , my dad was now my dad's . You , sir , my dad , my dad was World War two .
Speaker 2Well , I've had brother-in-law's and family members . Yeah , sir , yeah so .
Speaker 1I wasn't a draft Dodger , but I had a high lottery number when it was time to go in and I was all set to join the Navy if it got close . It didn't get close .
Speaker 2The war ended when I was a senior in high school .
Speaker 1Yeah , yeah 72 .
Speaker 2Five , four , four , five . Yeah , yeah .
Speaker 3I tried high school in 75 . Yep . So was I . I tried to enlist in the Navy in 75 Shut up Mars .
Speaker 1You know what were you ? Well , we . What year did you graduate high school ? I got out 72 72 took them four years to graduate . That's why I was kind of ooh hey . And by the way , speaking of which I understand Neaterville lost last night bad , I quit listening at halftime .
Speaker 5Listening . Go to the game . No , no , that's a season tickets this week . Well , it wasn't at home , it was in Montgomery . Well , the Montgomery Texas , yeah you could have gone 40 miles .
Speaker 3Well , yeah , and you could have said I had to be in Neaterville .
Speaker 1Out there oh well , you could have been out , you could have spent .
Speaker 3I would could have spent the night at my house . Yeah but I had to be in .
Speaker 1Neaterville . You bring your own spoon . He could have spent the night in there . All right , we could have cuddled . Oh Lord , let's not even go there . I just threw up in my throat yeah , joining us now help me .
Speaker 3Randy . What a little lead in the welden .
Speaker 1Randy , can , can you talk and let me hear you .
Speaker 4Yeah , hopefully you guys .
Speaker 1Oh good , yes , we can , because we've had some difficulties in our first Something . It's always that one that we always have problems with . We're really looking forward to talking to him and that's what happened there . Yeah , randy Weldon . Randy Weldon , pleasant Veterans Day to you , sir . I see you staying dry up there .
Speaker 1Yes , sir , staying dry as I can , okay well , I think that everything that related to cars that's outdoors this weekend is Not gonna have a good put . Yeah , but you know , I know that Mars sent me an update well , through you , an updated list of things that we were gonna talk to you about , and and so I don't have that list .
Speaker 3And I haven't read it . So how did coffee and cars for a cause go last week ?
Speaker 4Coffee and cars . For cause was was was a blowout . We filled up all the spaces . It was a real good turnout . Of course , weather was about as perfect as it could be , a little bit on the chilly side , but you know not that we've been out there in 21 degree weather , so it felt pretty good to us .
Speaker 3And who'd you guys raise money for last weekend ?
Speaker 4We're raising money for a facility or a new organization called heal , and I actually I find them very interesting . They'll be opening in December in Methodist Hospital in Woodlands . What they do is for people that have some sort of a Health issue , that's that's cropped up on them as maybe they've gotten older , or even if they're younger , they train you on the what the physicians are telling you . You need to make a change , like my case . You need to lose weight , right . Well , okay , at 67 years of age , if I knew how to lose weight , guys , I'd have done it right . These guys will train you how to cook , train you how to exercise and and they see , I don't want to say train you , but they teach you this in this facility that they're opening . So it's a really good organization for people to have . Maybe they've got they're they've got congestive heart failure creeping up on them and they need to make a lifestyle change . These people are there to teach you how to do that . So that's the organization .
Speaker 1Oh cool , yeah , very nice . Now there's other stuff going on too , and I don't know what they are . I don't know what you want to talk about , because I know you had a whole list of things .
Speaker 4Well , we had . We just had our fall car show last weekend . It was the . The beneficiary for our fall show is always honor flight Houston . So that honor flight Houston flies veterans back to Washington DC , many of them to see the war memorials of the war they fought in for the first time . It cost about a thousand dollars a veteran and it looks like this year I don't know for sure it's it's burn a Wilhelm's call , but it looks like we'll probably be able to we've probably raised enough money to fly at least two veterans back On a flight this upcoming year . They do four flights a year and of course it's an all charity organization , so all the money is raised by what donations come in . That's a really worthwhile
Veterans' Flights and Charitable Donations
Speaker 4event . Mike Mars , I think your dad was on one of those flights , was he not ?
Speaker 5he was , and it was , it was . He was very moved by it . He was in a wheelchair and they still managed to get him on the plane fly there to Washington and everything and it was . I got a couple of pictures that some people sent me of him there at the Memorial where he's looking at some of looking for names of some of the people that he was with , and it was . I was real impressed with it . If , in fact , I volunteered to pay for it once I found out that he could do that and they said , no , it was paid for , it was charitable organization , you know , and it was all taken care of . They would take a little donation but they wouldn't let us pay for it . We were just happy to see him get to go .
Speaker 4Yeah , they , they . It's an all expense paid trip that they provide for these guys and it's just Something that they're doing to for the veterans that fought for us and all of us on this program . Right now we're we're automotive enthusiasts , we get out there in the weekends and we're with our cars , with the things that we love . Those guys fought to enable us To go do that . I heard you guys talking about your dad's being in the . In the military Mine was as well . When I got out of high school I signed that obligation pre-card and Then I realized they'd want me to get out bed before noon and do the things . Told me to do that Just like really wasn't me , you know . So I never went and I do think those guys that did because absolutely They've given me a lot of freedom to enjoy my lifetime .
Speaker 3Yeah , they've sacrificed so we can have freedom .
Speaker 4Yes , sir , yes they have . So , yeah , on a flight , on a flight's a big deal A lot of times . Well , you guys , we had a teddy kill Patrick or Kirk Patrick I can't remember his last name exactly on the program when we did the national show at the Lone Star flight museum and I don't remember exactly , but I remember he flew more Missions anybody else out there but and he was a fill-in for us , hit last minute but happy he got there and talking about his experiences . I think that's something that's really important with the veterans organizations don't just thank them for the service , but ask them about some of their stories . Let them talk to you about you know their experiences because they've got some sincere lifetime experiences out there .
Speaker 4So , anyhow , on a flight , houston's our fall charity . We have two big charities our , our springtime charity , the money that we raise money for in our spring shows For Gallow Christmas for kids , which is also coming up , and I'm not sure how much money will donate there , but again , it's about a thousand dollars a kid that the Gallow Christmas for kids foundation Donates , wow , and we're make sure and ensure that that kids have a Christmas .
Speaker 2Well , it's not just a little things , it's not just a little kids . There are there young adults , there are preteens , there are teenagers that actually Participate in that as well . So it's not just that the two , three , four , ten year olds . There are a variety of children that need .
Speaker 4Well there are , and the gullis don't overlook that . I mean , they're really embedded in the community . What a wonderful job they do in reaching out here . You know they get involved with its teenagers in the high school , so they're involved in quite a bit of different areas of the community . You know one of the things , Don , being a broadcaster , I appreciate this . I did the announcing and the music at the North Side Show . We went inside because my wireless mics would not work inside the metal building . We set up a second system .
Speaker 2You should have called Mike .
Speaker 5You should have called Mike .
Speaker 4He knew better than you . He should have called Mike . When we were done with the awards , I came back out . I had a Coke Zero sitting there and I went to take a swig of that . Last swig out of it tasted something hard in there and went to spit it out . It turned out to be a yellow jacket that decided to sting me on the end of my tongue .
Speaker 1What are the chances of that ?
Speaker 4I don't know what the chances are , but I do know that you know I took my time breaking the equipment down , getting it packed up , make sure it was safe and secure , not broken .
Speaker 1As your tongue swole up to you , couldn't talk anymore .
Speaker 4It was swallowing up but we played a lot of music right to the end . But I ended up going to the ER clinic and having them pull that stinger out . You can see it right on the end .
Speaker 2Oh , wow .
Speaker 4Yeah , that's what I don't , don't , show us .
Speaker 6Let me see how that looks . Let me see how that looks , show me .
Speaker 4We're good now .
Speaker 2You played a lot of Bee Gees .
Speaker 4Yeah , no Bee Gees . Thanks for that , Joe .
Speaker 1Hey , I want to talk to you about the Waller County Sheriff's Department reaching out to you guys to bring trained judges to their upcoming car show . Tell us about that .
Speaker 4Well , you know , years ago we did judging clinics and then Vernon has brought that back . Vernon's done such a magnificent job after covid bringing the club back to life and he brought back judging clinics and detailing clinics . But the Waller County Sheriff's Department apparently reached out . They had put on a car show last year that judges I guess weren't real appreciated and we all know how judging can be subjective or is subjective . So they saw that we had judging clinics and they've asked Vernon to provide judges that we've trained and to judge their car show this upcoming year . So I think it's one of the beneficial things about when you have a club that goes the extra mile to put on clinics like judging , detailing even if it's car repair for their members and not , in our case , non-members will train whoever shows up . But we're trying to get this to a to a higher level and I think this is proof that there's a need for it out there in the community .
Speaker 3So I can volunteer to get trained and I can go judge the cops .
Car Clubs
Speaker 3Sign me up . That's right .
Speaker 4In your case , though , Conrad , you may want to change your name before you get on site . You definitely have to afterwards , it's funny .
Speaker 5You should say that , because I had a friend of mine this week .
Speaker 1Well , I asked him . I said what do you do this weekend ? Oh , nothing . You don't have a hobby or something ? No , not really . And so I said you know , I know that you're really not in the cars . You don't have to be in the cars , but there's so many different car clubs that do so many different things . Back in the day , when I was in San Jacinto Corvette Club , bill Sight's wife , sharon , you know she was always doing the Y's and the Y's and the Y's . She was always doing the wives thing and the wives thing kind of melded into showing the cars . But you know , some lady would be selling jewelry , another one would be selling drinks , another person . There's always something for somebody to do and there's always something in a car club that you can get volunteered for . If you don't want to volunteer for yourself , there's always work to do . Well , it's all networking Pretty much . Yeah , it's , it's the camaraderie , and the camaraderie Mainly . I mean Bill and Sharon Sight's been my friends since 19 . Well , I've been a friend of theirs since 19 .
Speaker 3They've known , they've known you .
Speaker 1Yeah , they've known me since 1977 . And I met them at a San Jacinto car club meeting out there at Town and Country .
Speaker 3They've been to all three of them .
Speaker 2No , thank you .
Speaker 1Three . What Weddings , you said you were told . We were nice job , I guess he didn't , doesn't listen , apparently seven years old again , but you know , leslie is going to take care of your ass . Yeah , we just say , conrad , you're good job , good job and anyway we shut up bars and though Don something you just mentioned .
Speaker 4When it comes to , when it comes to clubs , you know the cars bring us together , right , Right , but once you meet the people , you end up making friends that last for a lifetime . You know they just you and , and through the automotive industry I've met you guys . You know , and and I know that's not positive for y'all but Highlight for me , guys- oh , it is .
Speaker 1It is , and I will tell you this , that it has brought me a lot of joy in my adult life that that I would have never gotten . You know , it started as a , as a whim , and I went to a Corvette Club meeting not knowing anybody , not having any pre determined idea of what was going to take place at the car club meeting . It was about the Corvette , that was it . I didn't know anything about car clubs , I just saw somewhere they had a little bitty boxed and the Chronicle or something Corvette Club meeting , you know Thursday nights or whatever the heck it was at the time and I thought , huh , I have to check that out , let me go see . And through that the beginnings of my car enthusiasm , it will call it .
Speaker 1I met Craig Beerman , who's been a lifelong friend of mine , a speed and sport chrome plating , and he used to be speed and sport speed parts that . I met him when I went bought stuff for the Corvette back in the day , and it's been a lifetime of friends that I still have many of them today . Some of them have died , actually it's been so long , but you get it .
Speaker 4And that's all right , I had . I had somebody reach out to me and I want to say it was May . They bought some Mustang parts generation one Mustang parts and they restore Mustangs asked me to pick those up . I well you guys were aware I went down in Sugarland , picked those up . That gentleman then contacted me in late June , early July , had some more he'd found , wanted to meet me . So we met and I picked them up .
Speaker 4Then my truck was full of car parts until October when I went up to the Mustang Club of America meet in at the track in the Heartland Park in Topeka , kansas , and I finally got that stuff out of my truck because I need to use my truck every now and then . But you know it was , it was a friend that called me and asked me to pick up those parts . I had no hesitation doing that , drove to Sugarland , did it , met the gentleman for a second time , picked up the next load of parts and then got him to Topeka so he could take him back to Atlanta with friendships that span around the globe actually in this hobby , no well , randy , it's always great to talk to you and and we got me a plan you going to go to Autorama this year .
Speaker 4I've actually unfortunately getting paid to go to Vale Colorado to live , all expenses paid to install a computer . To install a computer so you can have electronic program guide and streaming apps on their hotel TVs .
Speaker 3Well , that's what he does for a living . Yeah , I know . He's a rough life to go to Vale Colorado . That's how he times it . You know he probably kind of he probably times South Florida stuff in the summer , so he can get a little beach time in too .
Speaker 2Well , see this , he's going to Thanksgiving . I think in Memorial weekend he went up there and unplugged it , so he can fly out there and plug it back in .
Speaker 4Let's not broadcast that live , okay , we ?
Speaker 1won't , Randy .
Speaker 4Don , I know you guys need to roll on . I did want to mention one thing .
Speaker 1Please , that's good .
Speaker 4Let's say , club of America has a 60th anniversary coming up , or 60th birthday party , so it's a 60 consecutive years of production of the Mustang , the only car that's been in production at long . We're holding an event at Barber Motorsports Park .
Speaker 2Oh , wonderful .
Speaker 4And Leeds , alabama , which is basically East Birmingham , april 5th , 6th and 7th . Registration for that's open now . But there's National Car Show and track event going on . We've got people coming in from around the world for that , and when I say that it'll be people from France , italy , you know , germany , you name it . They'll be coming in Australia Is is is is ?
Speaker 2is Manuela coming ? Yeah , I was going to say is there a mutual friend from Italy coming ?
Speaker 4Well , I hope Manuela is coming , because I'll certainly be there and be looking for her .
Speaker 1As will everybody else . Randy , thank you so much sir .
Speaker 4Thank you guys , nice to see you . You too , take care , have a good time in the mountains .
Speaker 1All right , hey , I'd like to remind everybody that you can get in touch with us through an email . Yes , in wheel time info at in wheel timecom is the
Car Events and Review
Speaker 1address . Time now for the cruise in calendar .
Speaker 3We don't want to belabor this because we're running a little tight on time here I'd say probably most of them shut down tomorrow is uh , don't even do that , Don't .
Speaker 1No , never mind . No , don't not tomorrow . But you got others right .
Speaker 3Well , tomorrow is cars and donuts in uh off of Albert Aberlean in Houston at the five performance shop . Christmas cruise is set for uh . Um , never mind , you said , don't do it Back to you .
Speaker 1Don Wait a minute . A Christmas cruise , that's Christmas , isn't it ?
Speaker 3Yeah , is it tomorrow ? No , it's not tomorrow . Well then , keep it going .
Speaker 1Uh , we just said don't do it for tomorrow .
Speaker 5Tomorrow is rain out , yeah .
Speaker 3We the the the the Sunday night live at Connell country . Used cars in Colleen is a tomorrow night 6 pm to 10 pm . I figured it wasn't raining in Colleen . Um , uh , also tomorrow night is the car meetup at the true value in Willis , texas . Okay .
Speaker 1What you talking about , willis , thank you , I didn't mean to cut you off , you're okay . I didn't really mean to cut you off . I'm thinking , if there's any kind of car event for the next two or three days , it ain't happening . It ain't happening , yeah , unless you . I got it , your car , in a box and you could trailer .
Speaker 3Driving a .
Speaker 2Jeep . But you know what ? Kathy's probably going to consider washing hers . She washes her car every weekend , so she might want to wait . You might want to wait .
Speaker 1Okay , thank you , sir . Time now for this hour's car review . You had a chance to drive the Ram 1500 . And this is not a yonder by any stretch of the imagination . All right , the 2024 Ram 1500 is available in the tradesmen the Lone Star , the Rebel , the Laramie , the Limited and the TRX . Those are the trim levels that it's available Tradesmen . Obviously is the entry level . Review trim level is the Limited Elite Crew 4x4 . Now this is a new addition onto the Limited trim level , called the Elite Gorgeous truck . Still a standard pickup truck , half ton , five passengers including the driver . Exterior changes Nothing significant this year . Redo is scheduled in the first quarter of next year . Mars did you know that ? No , I did not .
Speaker 5I thought they were going to get away from all that .
Speaker 3Going to redo it when the strike's over , huh .
Speaker 1Don't know , I think it's already on the books . Interior features sharp looking bodywork with different grills for the different trims . Two bed lengths are available . Overall , factory bed covers work great . Did I say that Bed Something ? I can't read my writing . This is the best looking pickup truck on the market period , the best looking pickup truck on the market , I would agree .
Speaker 1I would agree . I got the multifunction tailgate with the center mounted step up . Also , painted or chrome bumpers are available on many of the Ram 1500s . You can even go for hubcaps or high-zoo chrome wheels . Which do you prefer ? Chrome wheels , zoot , chrome , zoot , high-zoot yes . Interior highlights Big optional 12-inch infotainment screen . That works great . Each multifunction center console has many configurations Best seating among all the competitors . By the way , back to that center console , it has a sliding tray under the lid . That is brilliant Because it opens up all that more storage underneath it . Then you got the sliding tray to put whatever kind of you can hide your stash . He pens and paper For you . That would be correct . You could hide your stash , yes , pens and paper and coins .
Speaker 3That sort of stuff , but you're still a fan of the UConnect .
Speaker 1Yes , in this truck , Seating is among the best of all the competitors . Sophisticated dash and configurable displays are at the top of the heap in this thing . What I liked about it the luxury in this truck is unparalleled among pickups or cars . What could use improvement More of it , please . It is just stupendous Seating is a 5.7 liter V8 Hemi with a mild hybrid e-torque system . Now they're doing away with the V8 Hemi and they're going to go with an inline six , and some of them will have 500 horsepower Wow .
Speaker 3And God's a torque ?
Speaker 1Yes , this one has 395 horsepower , 410 pound-feet of torque , eight-speed automatic transmission . Tow rating 11,470 pounds , payload 1480 . 17 miles per gallon city is what it's rated , 22 on the highway for a combined at 19 . I got 17.7 over 252.2 miles . What I liked ? Plenty , plenty , plenty of power . What could use improvement ? Better fuel economy . But it's coming with next year's inline six cylinder . I'm really looking forward to driving that , because I am an inline six kind of guy .
Speaker 1Ride and handling four corner air suspension on this thing . It rides as good as , if not better than , that Mercedes Benz GLS that I had the week before . Really , I kid you not . It's amazing Pricing . Base trim price is $68,145 . Prices tested $79,165 . Base model price $41,60 . Competitors the Ford F-150 . Now these are the base model prices . Okay , it doesn't make any difference what trim level it is . You can always find one that competes against it in the other brands . The Chevy starts at $42,000 . The Toyota Tundra starts at $41,015 . If you are looking for a pickup truck , and especially if you are not bound by the brand loyalty , I would encourage you to go and look at this truck .
Speaker 3And by far the best interior of the four major brands at selling trucks .
Speaker 1Almost anything I would put it up against , including the high-end cars , cadillacs included . This thing is unbelievably good and they've made a name for themselves because of it . And all of the other truck manufacturers continue to chase the Ram truck . And at this level , who brother ?
Speaker 3Well , what do you think of the e-torque ?
Speaker 1I know sometimes those systems you're not a fan , I do like it and it had a start-stop feature on it and you couldn't tell , because it gets , I mean instant . Now I'm a two-foot driver , brake accelerator , two feet , and you know that doesn't bode well . You're generally speaking for a start-stop feature , but with this could not tell it really worked well . So I'm really looking forward to seeing what this inline six is going to do . I cannot wait me , being a six-cylinder fan , all right , very good . The Inwheel Time Car Talk Show is available 24-7 through the iHeart radio app . Just look for Inwheel Time Car Talk .
